Backhoe Ford 555B Transmission Anomolies

I have had a 1988 Ford 555B backhoe for about 5 years. It runs and moves, but it has to be in neutral to move forward or reverse. If it is placed into a gear, it doesn't engage the hydrostatic forward and reverse. Is it stuck in a gear?

Makes no transmission noise, feels like it shifts into all of the gears, but only has one speed. Any help for this novice would be greatly appreciated.

It's stuck in one of the gears. You can probably shift into one of the four speeds and it will move. That's the one that it is in.
