I'm new at this tractor thing. I've purchased 40 acres for a future home, horse pasture, and actual farming of about 20 acres. I went looking for tractors and got a good case of sticker shock. I'm not sure how big of a tractor I will need. I will be plowing, disking, planting, moving dirt, filling trenches, moving snow ect. Any Ideas how big of a tractor I might need? Given my sticker shock I'll probably be looking at a used tractor. What should I be looking for? There is a used Ford 5610, 1985 with 4000 hours that is availabel. Seems like a lot of hours. What do you think about this tractor?
Thanks Brian

The Ford 5610 is a nice tractor.

72 engine hp
66 pto hp
53.81 drawbar hp

Category II 3point hitch

5800 lbs

8 forward gears
2 reverse gears Made between 1982 - 1993

That should handle whatever you throw at it. Does it have a front end loader?

Is it 2 wd or 4 wd?

How's the condition?

Well first things first, some more info in BIO
would help.
The first thing u need to determine is what
are u planting.
Second is how long do u have to do it.
20 acres could take 1/2 day to plow and disk or week
depending on size of machine.
4 row corn or drill wheat or hay or beans ?
U will need to get something to pull the largest
implement u plan on using.
So get a plan:
1. MONEY
2. Crop
3. Time available w/ weather factors
4. Implements size and availability
5. Look around at lots of new and used machinery.
6. Lots of people on here for help and give location
for suggestions on dealers in area.

More information-
Currently have no implements or even tractor at this point. I will be planting trees (shelterbelts this year) and primarily planting food plots for wildlife in the future. Corn, grain, clover, and sunflowers.
The winters can be harsh here with significant snow fall with drifts needs to be able to get snowblower for adequate snow removal.

The local county ag service has tree planters for rent
and they need about 50hp+ tractor to pull.
Rental is really cheap BTW.
Used 4 row corn planters are fairly cheap but are u
picking corn or shelling (cutom combining?).
How much time do u have to do this?
