1956 ford 600
I have a ford 600 with 12volt conversion. I am looking to go with a petronix electronic ignition but know little about them. I watched a video and learned some. My coil is a 12volt without internal resistor, I have a ballast resistor, negative ground, and plug wires are belden 7mm metallic cable. Has anyone done this and how did it work out?? Tractor is 1956 and an excellent runner but I had a couple issues with spark. Any help would be appreciated. Bob

I have no experience with a Pertronix in a tractor, but I added a Pertronix to a car in 1997 and have not touched it since. The car is a summer play toy, so it is not an everyday driver. I have done a 12 volt converson to my 641 and 860 Ford tractors, but left the points in place. I will jinx myself saying this, but I did the 12 volt conversion to my 641 almost 10 years ago and have not touched the points in it.

Thanks for the reply. I have read many reviews and most are positive. I have had a couple instances where I lost spark and after doing the same thing, all the sudden I had it. Never found that smoking gun. I have changed plugs, coil, ballast resistor, cap, rotor within last year. The points look new and are not really that old. I thought going to a electronic ignition would solve the issue. I did not do the 12 volt conversion but I have owned this tractor since 1993 and have done many things to it. The oil pressure is 58lbs and she runs great.

Points may look good, but still be not be clean. Try rubbing a dollar bill or piece of a brown paper bag between the points to clean them.

When I had the problem, I used emery paper and doubled it over and after doing the cleaning I made sure no deposits were left. When I had the problem, I was warming the tractor because I had not run for about three weeks. During winter, I no longer use the tractor for anything. I have a couple of 4-wheelers, both with plows, that I use. I am in Dixon, Il. and this winter has been a doosy. The tractor sits in my big shed, not heated but out of the elements. As it was running and I was exercising the loader it died like someone turned off the key but no one did. Bob
