I just replaced the volt regulator on my Ford 641 tractor (1958, 6 volt) because the old one wouldn't register a charge or discharge. The new one showed charging at about 10 A immediately after I started the engine. Ah ha, I thought, solved the problem. After a few minutes of driving I noticed the ammeter needle bouncing between charge/discharge and in a few minutes more it deadlined and the generator light came on. bummer:mad: Is the regulator blown? There were no instructions about polarizing the regulator as I had done years ago when I previously replaced it so I did not polarize it. Did that screw it up? Any ideas?

regs don't get polarized.. genny's do.

motor test the genny.

slip belt off, jump bat hot to arm and field.. if genny spins.. she likely will charge.

now.. if she spun.. put belt back on..

start tractor.. jump bat hot to field at around 1000 rpm.. charge lamp go off and a vom show charging?.. but goes to discharge with field not jumpered? if so vreg field ckt is open...

if nada, then do above test again and jumper bat to arm.. if doing this makes charge, then cutout and/or field ckt are open.

if cutout is open.. it's a gonner. replace.

if field ckt only.. SOMETIMES it's stuck contacts that you can pry the case open and tweak... but usually today with chinese junk. it's a gonner.. replace.

post back if ya need more help.
