FORD 641 Workmaster
Was running my 1960 641 Workmaster when I began to hear the noise in the video. The oil is level and Oil pressure according to guage on tractor is 25. Looking all around motor to see if I could find an external rattle, nothing. Just wondering now if this motor is blown.

It does not have the sound of crankshaft or rod and does not follow engine frequency. It sound like fan blade might hit a lose sheet metal. Can get a automotive type stethoscope to isolate the noise. I'd start form the head area, it might be a valve spring broken and the valve getting hit by the piston. Taking the valve cover of to check the cam shaft, push rods, valve steam and spring should be pretty easy thing to do. Certainly you have gas engine sound as you do not have a diesel engine.

i'd feel around on the valve cover AND the pushrod cover. might have a bent pushrod slipped off the lifter...

don't worry... if a valve stuck down, the piston won't hit it. I guess you could DROP a valve if the stem broke..e tc.. but simply stuck down it won't kiss. it's a non interference engine.. as I found out. :)

check the fan /water pump beairng. fan may be coming loose and hitting shroud or hood.

I also notice you are missing the crankcase breather top cap.

if nothing on those tests.. pull spark plugs and roll her over and find if any of hte lungs aren't breathing...

I love non-interference engine. My boys vehicle are all Interference and timing belt, what a bad combination.

i hear ya. timing belt is the worst. chain not so bad. and timing gear the best.

that red tiger is timing gear and non interference.

I was unsure of that a few years ago till I hung a set of valves and made neat art out of some push rods.

no piston kissings valves. i was a happy camper.. :)

push rods had to be cut with bolt cutters to get them outta there.. :)

Nice:thumbsup:

If it weren't for me wrenching then, no way I could afford the fleet of 5 jalopies (of course they all are in good working condition) that I own and one new car (6th) that mom drives. Her's is timing chain as Honda gone back to chain lately. Between timing belt replacements with mandatory water pump replacement and CV joint replacements alone I save a bunch of monies.:D

JC,

ps. My Dodge grand caravan has a Mitsubishi engine with timing chain.. woo hoo:)

The sharp rapping sound in the video does not sound like a rod bearing problem as those types of issues are more of deeper sounding knock. It reminds me of the sound of a cracked exhaust manifold where the leak is next to the exhaust port of one of the cylinders. As an earlier poster suggested pull the plugs and do a compression check. Even with good compression it is possible that the lash on one of the valves is way too high.

Hopefully not a broken valve, bent push rod or damaged rocker arm.

i'd still pull the valve cover and see the train move.

also look at the heat shields above the manifold to make sure not loose.
