1960 Ford 641
20,000 Sq ft. Field of sand w/ patchy low growth. Relatively flat. I want to prep land for loam and need input. Currently own box blade and landscape rake. I've been told by many a tiller won't function with my tractor, so I am wondering if I should invest in a disc. The sand is not too compacted. So requesting help help in order of operation. Thx

You should get a disc. A good disc. Not one of them angle iron frame things. Use this internet to find a good heavy used one. I found a good tuff line at the scrap yard. It needed a little help but just a little. Disc it in lines one way, in an x pattern, then lines the other way. Should be fairly chewed by then.

Probably max 6 footer if it is a heavy duty disc. . You want a unit wider than the width of your tractor.

6 is good. That will make that tractor earn its keep. A good heavy disc will sink down and cut that Sandy soil very good. 5 will work if that's what's available. Make sure tires have water.

There are 43,560 square feet in an acre, so you are inquiring about processing less than 1/2 acre.

I see no reason a TPH 60" to 72" roto-tiller would not perform well on your Ford
541 unless the tractor gearing is not low enough for creeping.

If it's nodular cast iron it can be stick welded. It is a little messy but you can clean it up with your grinder if appearances matter. But since it's a tractor part probably cast steel. Either one can be arc welded. Hit it with a grinder. Starry sparks are steel, t shaped sparks are nodular.

I’m quite certain the tractor gearing will not be conducive for tilling.

With 2-WD and only 3,300 pounds bare tractor weight you will be limited to a Disk Harrow with pans 18" in diameter, from 60" operating width to 72" operating width, depending on your rear tire spread. Probable 2021 new cost $1,800 to $2,200.

I recommend a $250 Middlebuster to break the surface, then using your Landscape Rake to smooth the broken ground.

You will need to pin the inboard end of your TPH Top Link in the lowest paired holes in order to maximize Middlebuster vertical adjustability.

Thanks for all the Info. Can't find a disc anywhere to to buy rent, or borrow, so I'll have to stick with box blade and rake.
