Ford 6R140 6 Speed AT

I am sure it will have a spin on filter. I have 2 PSD trucks with the 5 speed Torque Shifts. A 2004 F-250 and a 2006 F-350 and both have them. They are mounted up by the front head light on the passengers side. Its in the lines going to the tranny cooler.

Chris

Are you sure it wasn't an aftermarket add on? We had a 99 and 03 and they did not, maybe they started in 04. Also in the article it said, no external filter, it will be an internal that I think has to be accessed from the torque converter.

"The internal dual-media filter removes the need for an external filter, which also eliminates another potential leak point for the transmission."

No, its factory. It started with the 6.0 which had a totally different tranny than the 7.3.

I am torn on the no external filter thing???? While I like the ease of the external filters on my 6.0 and on my neighbors Dmax there is still a internal filter on both so you still have to drop the pan. We have drain plugs on both and change the fluid every 25K and its not really that big of a deal. What I do not get is why a internal filter at all? Just put on a external filter and a drain plug and the service would be no more than a common oil change. I guess that is too easy.

Glad it will be offered with the 6.2. I doubt it will be standard with the gasser though.

An internal filter of some kind if a must. The pump pulls it's fluid from the trans pan. What ever is in the bottom of the pan gets sucked up. You don't want junk getting sucked into the pump.

My way of thinking is that the more filtering you do the cleaner the fluid moving around inside of very small openings in valves and passages there will be.

I would not want to run my trans 150,000 before changing the fluid. I know there is folks that do that kind of stuff all the time. I like to at least think I am trying to keep my stuff well maintained.

I would not know why? The 5.4 and V-10 gassers have had the Torque Shift as standard on the F-250 and up since 05.

Your right Chris. I misread the 6 speed as being an automatic instead of the manual. Thats good news!

1. Works with Ford's Gas and Diesel Engines

Unlike GM's and Chrysler's heavy-duty trucks, which use separate transmissions for gas and diesel powertrains, Ford's latest HD pickups continue to share a single transmission for both applications. The 6R140 has to be flexible and intelligent enough to accommodate the low-end grunt of the 6.7-liter diesel and higher-revving peak power curve of Ford's new 6.2-liter V-8 gasser.

I personaly would like to see a spin on trans filter, a drain plug in the trans pan, and also a drain plug in the torque converter like the 4R100 had. My 13yrs of experience as a mechanic tell me that 150k is to long of a maintenence interval for a auto trans, regardless of what they're studies say LOL.

Couldn't agree more. A spin on that you can change easily is cheap insurance. Although our 77 Chevy Caravan went 150K without a change in the tranny.

That was my point about the 8.1 and DM Diesels. Not something new no matter what Ford claims to use the same tranny for both gas and Diesel. And like Diamondpilot, can't understand why GM dropped the 8.1. Except if it grew, the stock Allison T-1000 would have been toast.

And like Diamondpilot, can't understand why GM dropped the 8.1. Except if it grew, the stock Allison T-1000 would have been toast.

My theory is that the perception at the time was that with $4.00 per gal gasoline, and the ensuing panic because of it, the short sighted management team who was running GM at the time felt that nobody in they're right mind would buy a 10mpg big block over a Dmax or a 6.0L small block. This may be true of the Saturday night cowboy, but most of the people I know who own 8100's want gobs of power without the noise, smell, and new learning curve that come with a diesel, most have other daily vehicles, and fuel mileage is a sacrifice many are willing to make in return for less maint and a lower sticker price.

Most hardcore gasser guys will not be forced into a Diesel by a Car company. They just take their business elsewhere. In this case, elsewhere is Ford, and weakening GM's HD truck sales in the process, Although i'll bet GM tells it differently.
