Ford 740 Row Crop with Howard Aux Transmission?

I've read the 740 can pull two plows but have also read the Howard Aux transmission isn't best suited for heavy pulling?

In the real world of vintage iron... would he Howard Aux transmission be a liability?

According to the seller the Howard was bought to keep up the PTO speed while using the tractor at low ground speed...

The tractor has been in the same family for over 60 years...

Yes... it was used for Rototilling...

there is perception and purpose.

the purpose of that aux tranny, as mentioned, was to lower the ground speed of the tractro so that when the engine is at pto speed, that the unit fould run a rotovator ( tiller ).

The perception of the machine moving slow was that it made the tractor some kind of super stump pulling monster since it was 'geared' low.

that's the problem. Bubba and a snatch chain used a tranny that was meant to make the machine crawl, thinking it gave the machine more pulling power.

That howard gear cluster is about the size of a VHS cassette... don't pull stumps with it.

2nd gear on a 740 is FINE for a 2 bottom plow...

Had been looking for an over/under Sherman for the Jubilee... mostly just to have.

At this point, I doubt I would ever put it to work under harness outside pulling a wagon or parade duty.

Way back when the first Jubilee I found had a Sherman but the tractor was in rough shape and the seller was not budging... and did find a buyer.

I would not worry about the howard Unless it has been abused in the pass. A lot of people will say they are fragile but not so If there is chipped or broken teeth it's because of owner abuse. The hundred series was the next generation and from what I've heard they called them bulletproof.

Wow... same tractor with Howard and Sherman... I bet not a lot of those around.

The seller won't be back until next week... I told him I wanted it so we will see.

Right now my niece has my trailer as she does one week each year for her High School Class Homecoming float... the kids put a lot of time in it and sometimes it is hard to know my trailer is even under all the float decorations.
