Ford 7740 12x12 shuttle shift pops out of forward

Hey there,
I ended up buying a 1993 ford 7740 tractor at an auction today with known transmission issues. I tried searching but nothing really jumped out at me for the issue. What it seems to do is not want to stay in forward on the shuttle shift. The speeds and ranged shift without issue, and it shifts into reverse without issue, and it will go into forward, but at times it grinds a little and wont go into gear, or while its in gear it will pop out. If it wont go into gear, by rocking it in reverse a little it seems to help it go into forward..... The machine was a municipal mower tractor and has about 3200 hrs on it.
Any ideas or dirrection on diagnosing the issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

F/R cable adjustment/failure or F/R synchronizer is shot. Pray for a cable problem.

I was able to find some more info last night that came to the same conclusion. I bought it based on a worst case scenario. Be nice if its just an adjustment. "pray for a cable problem" lol if it is I'll be buying lotto tickets the day its corrected. If not i'll post pics durring the repair

G'day pull the floor out and check where the cables go into the top of the trans had one recently that the retainer for the cable housing had come loose and was giving probs going fwd.

Hey, 12x12 trans has linkage rods(adjustable) from f/r lever converting to solid rod onto top cover. As banjodunn said out with floor and remove top cover of trans and hope selector fork is worn but most likely it's manifold at rear of f/r synchro after wearing into gear causing float in top shaft resulting in probs engaging f/r.

Every one I have seen and worked on had a cable to select F/R.

Hey rick, must be different our side of pond as all European 12x12's have linkages it's only quad mod 16x16 have cables

Well finally had a chance to get at the 7740, finished getting it apart last night and this is what I found. Lucky it didnt come apart further I guess. Hasnt been a horrible project so far, the tiger mower deck and brackets get in the way a little bit, but its all doable with them in place. Got the parts ordered and will hopefully start to put it back together next weekend.
