I have a ford 851 powermaster with a 5 speed tranny. I noticed yesterday that it seems to have lost some power to the rear wheels. I was trying to go up a steep hill yesterday and could barelyy make it up in 1st gear. When I am running a brushcutter the tractor can barely go through anything. The motor cranks and runs fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello,
I would think your clutch is slipping if the engine is running up to speed and you are not moving. do you have any free play in the clutch pedal ? there is a few different clutches that could be in a 851 and I think the adjustment is different but if you have 1/2" to 1" free play you should be in the ballpark.

If it ran fine just awhile ago and now isn't, it might be ready for a tune up. First, check the air cleaner, then the fuel filter. Also check the exhust pipe that it didn't get dented closed.

Let us know how that is working out

I think I have to much play in the clutch.. The tractor will drive in all five gears it just doesnt seem to get any power to the rear wheels. How do you adjust the clutch?? Thanks. To the second post....the tractor engine runs fine...cranks right up..idles good ...no problems...Its problem lies in relaying the torque from the engine to the rear wheels.

If you have too much play or free travel in the clutch pedal and the clutch is slipping then I am sorry to say that your clutch is probly bad. short of maybe a mouse nest jammed in the pressure plate assembly or something holding the clutch fingers down.
I can't remember if there is a inspection cover to look at the clutch, it would be a plate bolted to the bell housing.
as far as the adjustment- you adjust the free play with the stop screw on the bell housing where the lever goes into the clutch and you adjust the pedal height with the jam nut and lincage rod. like I said earler there is several different clutches a single stage and a dual stage. but from what you telling us i would say that adjusting the clutch will not help. also you said the PTO was weak so I would rule out anything father down the drive train like the trans or axles .
Good Luck Ed

yes...unfortunately I think it is time for a clutch replacement.. There is a plate on the bottom side of housing. Does anyone know an estimate on what this kind of repair costs? Thanks for all your help, guys!

If it was here in my shop, I would get around $500 in labor.
a single stage clutch kit is around $190 and a dual stage is around $ 400 plus frt. you might want to throw in $75 for a flywheel grind. and maybe alittle more for the engine rear seal, if it needs it.

and 3 bucks for the trans input shaft seal.
