I keep my 8N outside, so it gets exposed to the cold here in Ohio. It starts right up without any problem, though. However, this weekend when I started it up I had a problem. Specifically, when I let the clutch out the engine stalled. And I couldn't get it in gear. It was acting like the PTO was engaged, but the shaft wasn't moving. And turning the PTO lever to the off position didn't help any. The clutch is obviously working, but does this sound like a case of frozen hydraulic fluid/water in the gear box? Is the fix just to wait for a warm sunny day?

Had a similar problem with an 841D. Three solutions -best first - quickest last:
#1. Thaw & change trans oil & COVER the tractor.
#2. Thaw & siphon water from bottom of the transmission. then COVER the tractor.
#3. On a below freezing day thaw until it runs then keep it moving until the trans fluid refreezes as a slush ( oil / water won't seperate until it thaws). This will remain working until the next natural thaw/refreeze cycle. This is the poorest long term solution but will get you moving quickly.

Transmission cover gaskets seem to suck water in on any exposed older Ford. A simple tractor cover will help a lot. A cheap tarp garage is one route. I made a conduit tent frame directly onto my FEL frame & covered with a 9x12 blue tarp. Used this for 3 years. On or off in 5 minutes or less. Made a conduit A frame at radiator end & another just in front of the steering wheel with a length of conduit running lengthwise stopping at the steering wheel. Another removable telescoping piece would extend that over the rear of the tractor & a blue tarp bungeed in place when parked. Tarp was steep enough to shed all snow/rain. Only the tarp & telescoping piece was removed during use.

When I bought my 9n, the hyd. fluid looked like milk. Get it warmed, and drain it before it damages anything. I covered the gearshift knob, and that helped quite a bit. The boot lets water in. TSC has the hyd fluid. You could use a block magnet heater if your going to drain it anyway. I have used a infrared lamp with good sucess as well. I ended up replacing the pump in mine, I don't know if the water damaged it, but it certainly didn't help. Pretty expensive, had a cracked housing.

one other option.. trans may be stuck in 2 gears at once.

I'd think ice in the gearbox would give under 27hp when you let the clutch out unless she was full and froze solid...

if in 2 gears.. you'll be pulling the shifter cover and jacking rear wheels and prying her back outta 2 gears and into neutral.. then inspect shifter pattern an nub, and forks.. find what is broken or worn and repair.

With consideration to your home zipcode, I think you are underestimating the ability of a very few inches of ice surrounding several gears.
It could be stuck in two gears as well, but the details more fit a freeze-up.

Yeah, I can move the gearshift freely. I can shift it into 3rd gear easily, but it won't go into 1st, 2nd, or Reverse.
