Well.. once again.. my 8n proved its worth, and impressed the wife, by pulling storm duty.

When the huricane was predicted to hit.. we gathered up our semi-free range chickens in pens and stowed them iv a very safe /secure section of the barn. We did this by piling our empty cages on a trailer, and towing it around.. scooping up chikens and turkey, and ducks.. penning them, and then stacking the pens onthe tractor for the ride to the barn. This am, the opposite trip occoured.

Both times I forgot my keys at the house, and simply used a 2' wire with gator clips on it to hotwire the batter directly to the coil.. wife thought that was pretty nifty too... I didn't ruin the moment and inform her that that was really a diagnostic 'tool'/method'.. and just let her think it was 'cool'..

The biggest pain was taking down / putting up a 20x24 tarp cover over my Nh 7610s as I didn't want the structure to fly away...

Old girl was making her keep this weekend.

Is your 8N still a 6 volt tractor or have you converted it to 12 volts?

Chris, I hope most of the storm passed you by as it did here in Jacksonville. So many poor people out of homes now. Jacksonville has always been blessed with good steering currents that have protected us a lot over the years.
I wish I still had my old 8N, but alas! it's been gone for many years. John

Glad to hear that ol' 8N is still worth its keep.

...and I'm especially glad to hear that you and your wife are safe from the storm... chickens and all. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

thats the way it was with my 2n, sounded like the battery was just about dead but fired every time no matter the temp.

We have a 8n here, and that tractor is great. For something built in the early 50's ( i think), its awesome. Starts every time, and is built sooooo strong. Neat things it has is a 3 point that works every time, and a simple tranny that even t he wife can drive.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Glad to hear your family and your poultry survived the onslaught of water and wind.

Soundguy,

Glad you weren't hit badly.

Isn't it amazing how these old tractors can sit, be abused, or even be used every day, yet when called upon always seem to handle whatever you throw at them?

It will be interesting to see how today's CUTs are in about 50yrs /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have an '58 8N and just this year decided to purchase a new CUT to replace it. I was amazed at how strong the Sherman backhoe is on this thing. I was expecting it to be a little weak, being on such a small tractor, but after you finally make your way up on it, it's no slouch!

Anyway, It's got lots of life in it yet, sort of gonna miss it when it sells.

I had a 1951 8N for 25 years. That tractor never falied to start as long as the battery had enough juice to turn it over once or twice. They are one fantastic machine.

In a moment of weakness I sold it to a friend.

Soundguy,
We were running around here picking u all the potental missiles on Thursday ... I'm supprised that you were able to catch all those chickens! I grew up working with a lot of 8N and their cousins ... Fordson Majors ... Deltrix (Spelling) and they all were very dependable tractors. Just had to be careful how you held on to the steering wheel when in rough stuff. I'm glad the storm spared us and feel sorry for the folks that it hit ... Did you get much wind ... we got very little here in Alachua.
