Can you tell me what type of and how much hydraulic fluid I should use on my Ford 8N tractor? I believe it's around a 1952 model. Also, while checking the fluid my son dropped a very small soft rubber animal in the tank. It was about an inch by a half inch and hollow and fairly soft. Do I absolutely have to remove that or will it be OK? I thought since it's so small and soft and made of petroleum base it might not be a problem. It will probably be a major job to get into the gear box and get it out. Thanks.

Ford originally called for mild EP gear lube, 90 wt. above 32 degrees F, 80 wt. below. Now they say to run Multigrade Transmission, Rear Axle, Hydraulic Oil 134D. Sold at your friendly New Holland store, of course. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I've never heard of anyone having a problem running either unless the pump has a lot of wear and then the 90 wt. is supposed to work better. As far as the toy, the hydraulic system on the 8N has no filtration so once the gears chew up the toy it is going to get sucked into your pump. I would remove it if it was my tractor. Did it go all the way down or is it on top of the internals?

Soundguy is the one who may know the best about how to get the toy out, but I'm thinkin' there is a side cover plate that is about 8-9" round. Remove this (If I understand your explanation of where the toy went) and see if you can retrieve it. I wouldn't want it roaming around in there, if mine.

Good luck.

Ist.. the problem.. where did the toy get dropped into? the fill hole on top of the tranny?

If so.. I'd try to fish it out with a 3 fingered grabbing tool if I could see it with a flashlight. If not.. it is easy to pull the tranny top cover. put the tractor in neurtal.. remove the bolts and lift straight up.. slowly.. watch out for a ball and detent spring which may or may not try to fly... usually if you go slow the pressure is released easy and nothing moves at all.

You'll need a new tranny gasket.. purchase or make it from gasket paper. It's a non presurized sump.

That's about the only place it could have dropped in on an 8n.. unles sit was somehow forceable stuffed down the itsy bitsy dipstick hole in the side inspection port in the hyds section of the diffy... and if it was.. just pull that side cover.. reseal and go.

There is always the possibility that nothing will ever happen and the animal will disolve... however if it does get suchek into the pump.. I see the relief and check valve sticking.. and possible damage to a pump chamber depending on the size of the material.. Not to mention that if it made it to the hyd cylinder.. it would be forever trapped in the cyl untill you pulled the top cover. Also small possibility that a small piece of rubber that was forced under pressure into the SA hyd cylinder could block the oilleaving the cyl once not under pressure.. though that is an extreme possibility.

One option might be to grap a paint strainer and a clean 5 gallon bucket and drain the big plug under the tranny if that is where it was dropped in.

The tranny/hyds/diffy sump is a common 5 gallon sump.. though oil will puddle in each area a tad.. so you may only get 3+ gallons if you only pull the tranny plug. If you get lucky.. the oil flowing out of that 2" plug will come out fast enough to wash a rubber toy out.

If you change the oil I also reccomend the 90wt OEM type oil. TSC sells a 'ford tractor tranny' oil.. as a 90wt gl-1 oil. Many wallmarts have it as well as napa as part # 65-205

good luck. If you've got any more N questions let me know.

To accurately date the engine, look for a lightly hand stamped sn on the left rear of the engine, just under the head.. it will be on a flattened boss.

8n sn's start with 8n.. 9n and 2n sn's start with 9n.. And yes.. a 9n/2n engine will fit on an 8n and an 8n engine will fit on a 9n/2n no problem. Lots people find they have a different tractor than they though after checking the SN. Post your SN and I'll get you the year made.
