Found a guy selling an older 7' 907 Ford flail mower that looks to be in pretty good shape and has new blades on it. He is asking $850 for it which seems a little high to me but I cant find anything to really reference that price against though. Also flails are kind of an oddity in my area for some reason, never see many of them around or for sale.

Also my plan for this mower would be to mow deer food plots with it, mostly clover. I would think it would do a much better job that the brush hog I have been using and spread the cuttings out more evenly instead of a pile in the middle that I get now. Thoughts???

A flail mower is a very safe way to mow in all conditions
mowing winter killed sod before the snow comes is a
very good way to control weeds and insects.

Parts are available from the ford new holland dealers,
flail master and clean cutter just to name a few of the
sellers of flail mower parts.

The use of a flail mower eliminates rooster tails of uncut
grass and brush as well and provides you with a better looking
mowing job.

You will need to mow slowly at the first mowing to bring the grass and
brush down and then you can recut it easily.

I would ask him to let you mow with it before you exchanged
cash for the flail mower though.

If the mower has been taken care of and greased regularly it will
mow very well and should like a vacuum cleaner in the distance
as it is creating a pressure gradient pulling air under the mower shroud
as the side slicers are slicing grass and brush and also acting as air foils.

The mowing method is referred to as "Verticutting" and it allows you to
recut the grass and brush already mowed slicing it into smaller clippings that
will dissolve sooner.

Well the chances of mowing with it anywhere around here this time of year is pretty slim since there wont be any new growth to mow for a few months still here in the midwest. What other things should I look at besides the obvious bearings, blades, and structural damage? Advice on if the price is in the ballpark would be greatly appreciated as well.

I think your in the ballpark for price. I paid $600 for a JD 25A 7 footer and thought I got a deal. Is the drive shaft to the tractor good? thats a $200+ investment if i isn't. The rest is not too bad if you have all the parts. I resurrected an old Vemco 6 footer for my first flail project so Im a lot smarter than I was then.
