I have inherited a Ford 917 Flail mower. I remember when my grandfather purchased it back in the mid to late 80's, and I cut our properties with it for years. It hasn't been used in the last 10 years but has been kept in a garage and still looks to be in really nice condition. I want to start fixing it up to use and I need advice on what all I need to start with. I am sure it will need a new belt, lube, and gear oil, but any other advice would be great.

Replacement belt should be a banded double, rather than two singles. Knife (or hammer) wear should be assessed, as well as hanger condition. As the knives/hammers work, they wear grooves in the hangers. As hangers stretch and grooves deepen, it becomes increasingly possible for the knives/hammers to strike the shroud. Location makes hangers a little hard to inspect, you might want to remove a few and examine them without the knives/hammers. I recently performed a 100% replacement of all knives (T-type) and hangers on my 917H, and replaced all hanger carriage bolts & lock nuts while I was at it.

Happy mowing Calvin,

Congratulations on your flailmower and We wish to welcome you as the newest member of the Flail Mower Nation.

Do you live in the Piney Woods of the north? Have there been any recent reports of the Mississippi Wild Man?

Thanks Greg for the info. That will be my winter project to fix that 917 up. Gives me something else to tinker with.

Leonz, I am not in the pine belt, but just North of there. I am not sure who you are talking about.

Thanks again,

Calvin

Hello Calvin,

I was referring to The local Sasquatches

I too just picked up a 917A. The owner's manual says to use "Ford 137" grease in the gearbox. What's an equivalent?

Any of the red high temperature moly greases should be fine.

Welcome to our newest member of The Flail Mower Nation.

Only 17,997 mowers to go.
