ford depth limiter chains?

Jeff I put the chain hooks on like yours and it's working well enough. Now, on another concern, years ago I worked with a one point hitch mower and had some incidents of the drive shaft coming loose and flailing around just behind my back. I am new to the 3 pt. equipment and, having heard the neighbor guys talk about their mishaps with their 3 pt. augers, want to ask you guys just what happens when something breaks back there. I'm not too scared of getting caught in the rotating shaft because I stay away from that, it's the loose flopping shaft that worries me.

I saw one thing go wrong last week. The bar from under the tractor back wheel to the lower hitch pin on the mower came loose at the wheel and dropped into the ground, causing the back end of the mower to shoot straight up. Either the pin came out or I forgot to pin it. Nothing broke but that surely was hard on the U joints. Hope this might help somebody.

only you know or can tell us what went wron on that lower lift arm as you are there and we are her.

either something broke, something came disconencted.. or forgot to be attached correctly.. etc.

as for the mower.

the pto shaft should securely lock in at the tractor and on the implement. on mowers that have shear pins, there should be a method to retian the shaft.. isually a c-clip that holds the yoke ont he smooth shaft..e tc.. or if a plate style shear.. there is a piloted shaft and 2 plates coupled by the shear bolt..e tc..

Soundguy,Yeah I said either the pin came out or I forgot to put it in, was just trying to warn folks like myself that the stabilizer bar, not the lift arm, can wreak some havoc if it drops off and sticks into the ground as you are making some speed.

I know there is something to hold the shaft if a shear pin breaks (mine are in the back near the gearbox), but if the front U joint lets go, I don't see what is going to stop that shaft from doing some serious flopping around until the blades stop. I think most mowers come with a plastic tube over the shaft and some chains to hold it but that was missing on mine (bought used). Probably need to rig up something JIC it lets go.

the aframe on a mower should provide some 'directional control' if nothing else...that shield with a small chain will help too.

good luck

Notice you list a YM1700. I looked at a YM2700 and was amazed at the knocking noise the diesel engine made... sounded like a giant woodpecker in there when you gave it some throttle. Yours like that?

I rigged up a restraint for the mower shaft with some heavy rope. Still remember the shaft coming loose at the gearbox on that old one point hitch mower while pulling it with a Farmall M. There was nothing to contain it and it sure got my attention.

Thx for the replies.
