I think 2000 or 2001 was when they switched to calling it the 7700 package. The 7700 number is the actual GVW rating of the truck. In 2004 the new bodystyle switched to 8200 GVW package for the seven lug. I believe that today the package has been reduced back to 7700 again because the truck itself is lighter due to the aluminum body.

On Ford's site, the options to get the 7 lug axles are "Max Tow" and "Max Payload".

Correct, it 7700 GVWR. The trucks were about 5200 empty leaving a honest 2500# payload.

The tow rating was around 9500# back then. Today it's north of 12000#
