Ford f150 diesel?

Ford did it in their tractor line.

In late 52 the moved from flathead gassers to a red tiger ohv. In about 58 they worked that red tiger ihv into a diesel.

By late 64, ford came out with a new design. 2000,3000,4000 were 3 cyl, gas or diesel, but wasn't a diesel based on a gasser, but the other way around this time.

If I'm getting a pre 65 ford, I want gas, post 65, I want diesel.

Perkins did the same with their 3 cylinder gas engine, used the diesel 3 cyl.

Re: Ford f150 diesel?

I'm a Ford guy. I have 4 Ford pickups.
But, I'll believe the diesel F-150 when I actually see them on the dealer lots.
A buddy of mine, sold his wife's Expedition because the F-150 diesel was going to be available the NEXT year. . . . . . . . That was probably 10 or 12 years ago.

Can't wait to see what they come up with. I'd love to see a little diesel ranger that got 35 mpg.

The only downside I see with a diesel engine in the Ford F150 would be the price tag.Heck a brand new super crew cab is around $40,000-$45,000 bucks.I wonder how much the diesel engine option would jump up the price tag?I bet another $5-$6 grand,no thanks..

Not sure what the mileage is, but you can get the diesel ranger almost everywhere but here. They were all over Afghanistan (paid for by us but being given to the Afghan military) and they seemed to be a pretty reliable vehicle. I believe that they're manufactured in the Philippines.

They were also common in Argentina, the federal police (Los Federales) used a crew cab, short bed version painted blue with black stripes. Saw one go by one time with 4-6 guys in the back all wearing bulletproof vests and carrying 12 gauge pump action shotguns. Not sure where they were going, but we went a different way...

Years ago I had ano Olds Cutlass that was diesel. GM used a gas V8 and converted it to diesel. I don't recall exactly the year. I think it was mid 80s. It needed a lot of maintenance.

Our neighbor had one as a company car, and it went through two engines and three transmissions in the first year. It was a 1980 Cutlass LS and his company refused to spend any more on it...my father bought it from them without an engine or trans. We bought a solid Olds 350 Rocket from a friend who had a junk yard and did a complete overhaul on it (.30 over pistons, bumped the compression ratio up, hotter cam, etc) got an overhauled Turbo 350 tranny for it and then spent a bunch of time making brackets to move stuff around, changing front springs etc. It turned into the best sleeper ever! Everybody was shocked that a diesel four-door Olds would light the tires up :)

I guess I will save the diesels for my commercial heavy duty trucks. I won't buy a V diesel, only inlines, and after getting burned on a couple of Cummins ISX engines, I will not allow a Cummins in any vehicle I buy. The only thing that even remotely catches my eye for a diesel in a pickup is the 2.8L diesel coming out in the Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon pickups. That is only because it is based on the VM inline 2.8L I have quite a bit of experience with. Very solid motor. The chief designer behind the 2.8L Dmax motor was siphoned off of his role at VM Motori when GM still had a 50% stake in that company. The new 2.8L Dmax is based on the VM 2.8L. The similarities are striking. Now if GM or Ford offers a inline diesel in a 1/2 ton, I might take a look. A V6 or V8, forget it. Is it any wonder why the heavy truck diesel engine manufacturers dumped the V motors and only make inlines nowadays? They are the most reliable, easiest to service, and less complicated. And great low end grunt.

I believe MF used the Perkins gas for a while but then went back to the 4 cyl Continental for those customers that wanted a gas engine. A dealer told me the Perkins gas was not as fuel efficient but I don't know how true that was.
