The search continues... Something just not right in the front end on it. Seemed to wander around the road and had a vibration pretty regular at 60mph. On top of that, the bed was shorter than I like (only 10'). Also the short wheel base rode like $^%&. Extra foot or two apparently makes a big difference in those trucks. Others I tried were not near that rough. Motor seemed fine though. Its a shame, it sure was a deal. Just found out why.

What's the word on the ford v10's?

A 2008 f550 has come up for sale. flat bed, 70k miles, 20k price

Been looking for a solid old 7.3, but not having much luck.

I have a 2002 F-250SD with the V-10. No complaints about the engine EXCEPT when I am running honey-do errands just putting around town, it seams to suck the gas down. When i get out and let it breathe a little, gas mileage is acceptable. Two years ago took it to Branson MO on family vacation and figured to was running 17mpg at that time. The V-10 is not lacking in power or torque. I bought it used and since that time have only put new battery in it and change the oil.

As I write this I am currently sidelined at a Phillips 66 station in a Penske 16' box E350 w/ the V10 awaiting repair on a trailer tire using wi-fi from the Super 8. The box is full of household stuff, not too heavy, and the trailer is hauling my 2009 VW JSW TDI, not too heavy. It's used about 62 gallons of gas over the last 440 miles, 7MPG. A similar trip this August w/o trailer but WITH the Penske 26' DIESEL truck FULL, got about the same mileage, a little better.

It pulls the hills well, better than the 26'. But if I had a choice I'd go diesel. 7 mpg is terrible. My '88 E350 7.3 has gotten about 15mpg over it's lifetime, including about 11 mpg towing.

The VW I'm towing gets about 45mpg :)

On the extended test drive (empty for maybe 30 miles), the computer said 8.4 mpg (10k truck w 4.88 gears)

I figured that if I avg 6000 miles a year, it would cost me $300/yr in fuel over a diesel, if the diesel got 25% better fuel economy. From what I have read, I will not be able to keep a 6.0 ford running for anywhere close to $300 a year, not to mention the additional upfront expense to purchase one (though they seem to be dropping fast in price).

I rented a roller to compact our gravel driveway. According to Sakai, the roller weighs in at 6,480 pounds and Towmaster says the average weight of the tilt-bed trailer I rented is 3,900 pounds. If so, when one factors in three tie-down chains and binders, I probably exceeded my Class V hitch's capacity by close to 500 pounds. Oops. Without checking my door placard, I probably exceeded the rated towing capacity too. Oops.

Sakai America, Inc. - SW300-1 Vibratory Rollers

In any case, the 1999 V-10 and 5-speed manual with 4.11 limited slip rear end towed this thing around just fine. Max speed I encountered on the flats was about 60 - 65. Since I only towed this about 25 - 30 miles round trip I don't have any idea what the mileage was towing.

Would a diesel have been better? Yep; but I don't tow more than once or twice a year. At my altitude (~5,200 feet), I'm sure glad I spent the extra $350 when I ordered the truck to get the V-10 instead of the stock 5.4 liter V-8 gasser.

Notice there wasn't much rear end squat.
