I started my tractor up after about a month and it will only operate in the lowest gear (range selector pulled all the way back). When I slide the range selector forward and try to move the main shift lever or shuttle lever, it wont lock in place.

Ideas?

Very good potential that the culprit is the detent mechanism. Look at post below, it mat help you a bit. You can also search "NH operating" for stuck gear or detent mechanism and you'll find a lot of info there.

A buddy of mine looked in the access hole and the clutch is siezed so any ideas how to un-sieze it?

I read other posts about braking in reverse and a few other suggestions to no avail plus power shifting. I sprayed kerosene in the clutch area and will wait a day or so

Anything else I can try?

What caused your buddy to think the clutch seized after opening the access hole? what did he see or not see to lead him that direction?

He looked inside with a flashlight and saw the two plates stuck together. Also the tractor has been out in the elements for a month, without being started and worked fine up until that point. When he drives it he can only work it in the lowest gear and depressing the clutch pedal does not stop the tractor.

Problem solved.

I just went out this morning, I sprayed Kerosene around the clutch assembly last night and blocked the clutch with a 2x4 overnight and started it in high gear just now and all is well. I got the advice on the kerosene and blocking the clutch from either here or some other web sites, I forget just now. And this 'SoundGuy' had other great ideas had that not worked, he is quite the resource out there, good experience.

Great:),

Soundguy is one and only around here. If you block the clutch pedal with a piece of 2x4 (or have some one to press the pedal all the way), then thru inspection hole you'll be able to use the screwdriver and rotate the clutch disk proving positive that you do not have clutch disk stuck to either pressure plate, flywheel or both. Glad I was painless.

JC,

Ps. I just read your first post after my question. Anytime you look thru the inspection hole the disk appears to be stuck. it is never lose. it only is when you press the clutch plate and even then the gap is so small that might be hard to see, hence using a screwdriver to jimmy it up

Yes, it is barely a gap. All the more reason now next year to put in my 20x25 garage and get this and my other crap under cover. Weather is unrelenting on machinery, rust never sleeps.

now that it's stuck once.. it may stick again.. keep blocking it.

also a can of braklene onto the bellhousing may be adviseable..
