i just bought a '54 Ford NAA, looks to be well taken care of. Question is....at 800 rpm, not at normal operating temperature yet, 40 degrees outside - when i move the lever to raise the 3 pt hitch with a 4ft bush hog on the back, there's about a 5 second delay before it goes up. it goes up fine. and it stays up fine. i can turn the engine off w/ the hitch and bush hog still up and it stays up really good, much longer than on other tractors that i've used where it leaks back down rather quickly. why is there this delay? i checked the fluid and there seems to be enough roughly speaking. the fluid looks clean. is it the wrong fluid? is something out of adjustment? is something else wrong with the hydraulics?

many thanks in advance.

Do you have live hydraulic? Can you raise the 3point with clutch all the way in?
If hydraulic pump is not live, and a piston type of a pump then I can envision hyd fluid may be leaking back to the reservoir from some what leaky piston seals. You may be still pumping with residual bypass and associated pressure loss yet enough to lift an implement. You must have tight spool valve check along with good lift piston ring seal since your 3pt implements can stays up a long time. I'm sure someone with experience with that vintage will chime in soon.

The NAA is for sure, live hyds due to the engine mounted pump.

I'd start with a fluid change .. perhaps some person put gear oil in the hyds.. thinking it was an 8n.

Use a good UTF fluid meeting the M2C134D spec.

Also remember that 800 rpm is pretty slow.. that pump is only rated at 2.9gpm at 2200rpm.

Does it do this every time you raise it or just the first time after you start the tractor.

I had that problem on my 1700 when it had some water in the fluid and it plugged the filter. Does your hydrolic fluid look milky?

No filter on the NAA. but the unloading valve CAN plug.. usually when it does.. the lift is inop untill the thing is disassembled and cleaned.
