Are the Ford/New Holland 2120 pto's live independent meaning they stay running when the clutch is depressed?

I think the terms "live" or "independent" are interchangeably used where design wise they are different. Live is usually reserved for the double clutch system, where there are two input shafts , one solid and one hollow and both splined along with two clutch disk and associated pressure plate all in one assembly. One shaft drives pto and the other transmission input shaft. Clutching half way disengages the transmission and clutching all the way disengages the PTO input shaft.

An "independent" clutch usually has one clutch disk, but two input shafts as I explained above with the difference the pto shaft is splined directly to flywheel and it turns all the time. The engaging of PTO shaft is done by a wet clutch pack passed the transmission and is hydraulically activated. A friend of mine has a JD5003 if I remember it right, the pto on that is called independent with dual clutch with the exception that pto clutch is activated by a handle next to his seat. He does need to clutch to engage pto which in true "independent" the pto can be engaged without clutching and on the fly.

They also call it a dual clutch. Partially depressing the clutch stops the tractor movement while the pto shaft keeps rotating if it is engaged. All the way in stops the pto also, as JC said. There is a lever on the left side of the seat and I have to use the clutch to engage it.

The 2120 is a big brother tot he 1920 I had. Mine was a 12x4 tranny and had a dual clutch / live pto.. I know you could get 12x12 shuttle trannies.. but think it was still a dual clutch system.

Did you buy one or are you still shopping? I guess if you'd bought one you could sit on it and see how the clutch/pto works. duh.

2120's have live PTO regardless of transmission type. SSS has a double clutch, EHSS has a single stage clutch, but for live PTO you control travel with the shuttle lever, leaving the dry single disc clutch engaged. No 2120's had independent PTO, which is different from live PTO.
