Ford New Holland 1215
my Ford/Newholland 1215 tractor has the ignition switch that has a pre-heat setting for the glow plugs- I pre-heated them and the tractor started however, the voltage regulator/rectifier started smoking like burnt toast, I quickly turned of the tractor and removed the battery cable. I have replaced the voltage regulator/rectifier but when I connect the battery the charge light on the dashboard comes on and stays on. Do I have a bad voltage regulator/rectifier new out of the box?

it could be just a bad alternator or generator!. I'm surprised they don't have a fuse on it to prevent this!..

An electric shop tested the fixed magnet alternator and indicated it was good. I defer to their 25 + years of experience, that skill is not in my wheelhouse. I did inspection on the wiring harness under the hood and under the dashboard, I did not see any melted wire insulation or bare wires. All the fuses seem ok. The starter motor does engage and turns the motor over. Just the charge light stays on and the battery quickly drains when the engine tries to start.

have the voltage checked, you should have 13.8V running. and the battery checked. it may have a shorted cell..
