Ford power steering

My 1956 Ford 850 has factory power steering. The tie rod cylinders are good, and the steering box was rebuilt by the dealership a couple years ago. The original PS pump died before I got the tractor, and a PO replaced it with a pump which he thought came off a Ford Escort. It works, but response time is way too slow. I am using universal tractor fluid (Ford 134) as recommended for the original system, but I suspect the pump was designed to use Dextron II ATF.

With the high cost of a correct rebuilt pump, with no core, you can understand my reluctance to buy one. Can I change the fluid to ATF without harming the steering box or cylinders ? If not, what is another salvage yard pump which would provide quick response using the heavier fluid?

Check the displacement of the pump you have.. should be easy to cross some number on it, then compair to oem.

and no.. I doubt using atf will hurt the system.. probably put engine oil in there and be fine.

clogged filters will hinder performance.. course.. depending on the pump used.. you may have to see what was cobbled in there.

the original 600/800 owners manual has a section onthe optional power sterring. Also.. one thing to consider... at low rpm.. lots fords have bad power steering. My NH 7610s and ford 5000, at idle.. have bad power steering. bump up to mid throttle and you can 1-finger it. your hundred series will be even worse. Also.. if you have ever driven the 2000/3000 with power (assist 0 steering.. it is just a bit better than manual steering .. IE.. don't expect it to be like a modern automobile or anything..e tc.
