This is my first post on this site. This appears to be a good site for getting info on just about anything mechanical. My appolgies if this has already been covered.

Anyway, I'm a novice mechanic (aka parts changer) and I could use a little advice. I have a 1967 Ford 3000 diesel. It's a nice tractor. I've used it mostly for grading our subdivision's one mile gravel road, and a little bush hogging. When taking the front wheel off I noticed that the hub sounded "grindy" when it was spun. I haven't taken anything apart yet. My guess is that the bearings need to be replaced. I looked at a parts supplier and noticed that the bearing kit includes the 2 bearings, grease seal, and a race. Questions: When I replace the bearings do the races have to be replaced. If so, do I have to have the races and seal removed and pressed back in? I don't have a press. Will I have to remove the hub and take it to a shop? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If the bearings are grinding I'd replace the race or you'll end up damaging the new bearings. I'v replaced many races without a press. Drive out the old race with a good drift, the new race can usually be tapped in using a socket the same size as the race.

Depending on the size I've also started the race and then put a flat plate across it and then pressed it into place with a couple of large C clamps.

Toad has you on the right track. I replace dozens of bearings and races each year working on boat trailers. Never had one I could not get out or in using his technique.

A 3-jaw puller can be use don some races.. or you can also weld them out with a thin bead of low amp weld on the race face.... just don't over-penetrate. Once welded .. let cool a few seconds.. then slap it down on a good table, and the race should have shrunk and will usually drop out..

Toad, Diamond Pilot, Sound Guy: Thanks very much for the help. With your advice I think I'll be able to handle it.

Have a merry Christmas!!

I'll add, clean thoroughly and repack with WHEEL bearing grease.
I too replace many races in a years time. Use a soft piece of steel round bar, angle it as much as you can and knock the race out from the opposite side of the hub. Be sure to start the new race in straight. It's easy to get them cocked. Find a piece of pipe for a race driver. Be gentle with the seal they damage easy. I line the seal up and place a clean piece of 2 X 4 over it and tap it in. Then lub the rubber lip. Be sure to clean the spindle and seal ride surface. It should be smooth and rust free.
