Hi folks and Happy New Year.

I have a 67 Ford 3000 gas, with 4 speed transmission. Normally it works great but the other day driving between fields I put it in 4th gear and in a few seconds it popped out of gear. I tried all other gears and they seem to be fine. I tried 4th again and it popped out once more. 99% of my use is in 1st gear and it has never failed me. So my question is, is this indicative of a larger transmission problem that needs to be fixed immediately? Or since I rarely ever use 4th gear, just ignore it since it's not causing me any real problems? Thanks again for all responses.

Likely detent problems.

If you virtually never use 4th.. you can either 'bunji-cord' it in when needed.. or.. fix it right and pull the top cover for a looksee as a start.

I know much more about automotive transmissions, but assuming a manual tractor trans operates more or less like a manual car/truck trans and that your trans isn't popping out of all gears your problem is likely isolated to your 4th gear... either worn tapered (4th) gear teeth or worn (4th gear) synchronizer hub splines.... could be as simple as a linkage adjustment.

No worries, it doesn't sound like your tranny is going to explode. Ignoring it will not make it worse or cause additional problems, if I'm right..... there are others here that should be able to confirm my thoughts (or correct me!).

Thanks for the responses, it sounds like I'm okay as long as I have no need to go fast, which I normally don't. I would be concerned if I ever had to sell it, that would definitely need to be fixed or disclosed to a potential buyer.

If you can hold it in gear (by hand) and it stays, especially under a load, there's probably nothing too serious wrong. (Detent???) But if it wants to jump out of gear even when you have a firm hold on the shifter, more than likely you have an impending major problem.
