I have an old Ford 3000 and it suddenly failed to start. Checked the battery and it is fine.
When the ignition key is turned it does not energise the starter solenoid.
To eliminate a number of possibilities I have disconnected the wire that feeds the starter solenoid from the ignition switch and touched directly onto the positive terminal of the battery. The solenoid then energises, starter motor turns over and the tractor starts fine. I have also bypassed the safety switch (neutral only) so I know this is not related to the problem. I have now gone back to the ignition to switch. The switch is a three pole switch. Voltage appears to be 11.9v but seems to be intermittent. Any advice on what checks to carry out next would be appreciated.

Energize the start wire by jumpering from the battery pos to the ign switch end of the start wire. Starter runs, you don't have a wiring problem.
If not, put test light on start lug of ign switch: if it lights when in start position, switch is ok (right then, at least). If not, easy to replace that simple a switch. You could use one from Napa or =.
11.9 volts is a bit low. Have you cleaned both ends if both battery cables and checked for cable corrosion?
