It started out as a intermittent problem. Sometimes it'd work on start-up, sometimes I'd have to drive a bit and it'd start to work. Now it is dead. No action at all when I move the position lever. Pump is turning and seems to be working ok, rear-end oil is good and up to level. Seems like a check valve or something down in. Question is where to start?

rear end oil level makes -0- difference to your hydraulic fluid level.

this machine has a rear end sump, a hyd sump, and a tranny sump. hyd fill up is under your left thigh, and dipstick is on the lower left side in a round cover... rear end fill up is under your right butte cheek and there is a level check pipe plug on the back, top side of the left rear axle trumpet.

have you burped the pump.. ie.. pulled the inverted hex plug out of the head on the top side? can also pull the plug from the option cover under the right front of the seat.

if you get oil there and no 3pt, then could be a sticky unloading valve, or a badly worn cam follower pin.. or both.

hows the oil? dirty oil is bad and can cause valve sticking problems.

post back.

by the way.. you really should get a service and owners manual for your machine... plus a parts manual. the owners manual has good info.. like where the hydro fluid goes... and the service manual.. even the cheap I&T ones at least give you basic troubleshooting steps.. and the parts manual is good for exploded diagrams.

Thanks soundguy. Yeah I need a manual. I saw the cover you mentioned and wondered, "why there's 2 of em". Thought it'd be same as my 8n... Did burp the pump, just foolin around trying to get it to work, and the oil that came out looked clean and the hitch actually started working jumpy that time. Next time it was totally dead again. Sounds like I am just out of oil. Will get to it Thur or so and let you know how it comes out. Will get the manual. Not like the 8n, at all. Thanks again.

you say you think it's out of oil? don't sound like it to me?.. besides.. you don't have to guess.. there is a dipstick you can check.

to me.. sounds like it is loosing pump prime and when you burp it it works. loss of pump prime is usually a suction side leak.. perhaps at the plumbing ( manifold) fromt he pump to the trans.... use only the CNH orings.. others may leak... if that's not it.. it may be a shaft seal leak.. and then the pump needs rebuilding.. if you aren't familiar with those pumps.. and it is the piston pump.. have a cnh dealer do it..

Live hydraulics are handy, but it took Ford a few years to work the bugs out of them. The hydraulics on the Jubilees and 600's were no where near as durable as were those on the later 8n's as you are now learning the hard way. This is a big part of the reason why 8n's sell in the same price range as these updated models. I will take a later 8n over a Jubilee or 600 any day. I also appreciate the better parts availability, power/weight ratio, and fuel economy of the 8n.

I'd take an 860 over an 8n any day.. the hyds work fine, if maintained.. are live.. and you have that nifty 2 stage clutch.

true.. N hyds were durable, low pressure, dismal 2.85 gpm flow rate.. and non live

the did have their sticky points.. IE.. sticky valves resulting in no lift.. or afull lift.. early 9n/2n were draft only and had the fork that could slip off.. etc. they all got pro's and cons... at least the 53+ machines had provisions for REAL external hyds..
