The old home computer has been running sluggishly lately and I'm thinking that reformating the hard drive will help. I've already copied "my documents" to the second hard drive, but I need some pointers on how to save my Outlook Express files and address book, as well as my Explorer bookmarks. Any help y'all can offer would be so very much appreciated. Thanks, everyone!

Are you running Windows XP?

If so, on the main CD there's a tool for exporting all your "stuff". I don't recall the name of it but it allowed me to export everything (Outlook stuff, IE bookmarks, software, printers...)

Brian, you just reminded me of another question. When I reinstall my OS, I'm using XP Pro (I'm running 98SE now). XP doesn't come with a startup floppy. Will it startup off of the cd-rom drive?

For Outlook Express, you can export your address book then import it into Outlook Express on another machine. The commands to Import/Export can be found under the File menu.

For your Explorer bookmarks, on Win2000 systems they can be found in the Documents and Settings folder. Then go to the Favorites folder under the user you want to copy from. Note that all the bookmarks may be under several different users (Administrator, All Users, Default user, etc) depending on how your system is setup.

Ahhh, I think so but I'm not a guru on formatting.

If you haven't already done so, you'll have to set up your PC to allow a boot from the CD drive. I believe you set this up when the OS is starting and it says something like "Use F# for setup".

Not sure but I think you should also be able to create a bootable floppy using the XP disk.

If I remember right, you insert that CD into the drive before formatting the hard drive and when it is ready to install XP, it asks you if you want to format the hard drive first, and it will then format the drive and continue with the XP installation.

Okay, I just have to say that I am sooooo disappointed that it took almost a WHOLE HOUR for my questions to be answered. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But seriously, thanks folks!!

My next question is regarding the import and export functions. Isn't that limited to exporting\importing to\from other software (versus a backup folder on another hard drive)?

Reformatting is a drastic step that is rarely necessary, unless your hard drive is actually having failures. The more appropriate step if your computer is running slowly is to 'defrag' the drive. Defragging will rewrite all the files so that they are stored in congiuous sectors on the disk. And you will not have to copy all your files off the drive to do it. This is something that should be done a couple of times a year and more often if you download and then delete a lot of files.

But before you defrag, I would run one of the popular spyware tools, delete all cookies, and run one of the tools made to clean up the Windows Registry. Doing these things and then defragging the disk should improve the percieved slowdown.

Howdy jpr..

One of the differences between the technicians and the wannabes is knowing where to get the knowledge you're seeking. Right from the horse's mouth...
I recommend you read this article if you can from Microsoft's Knowledgebase.
How to prepare to upgrade Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP

Since there have been many moons since W98 came out, you may need to read any info on hardware compatibility, etc. More than likely it will work just fine, but it really blows to find out half way through the upgrade that it won't, of course, by then it's too late to return to W98SE land! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
