I will also add that there is another program that seems interesting that I haven't taken the time to learn... microsoft access. It is a databasing program that you can keep track of inventory/records, but the little bit I played around with it, it's definitely not as intuitive as excel.

The other thing (other than good records, like OP is moving towards) that I've found to be pretty useful is a Ptouch label machine.

If you are commercially maintaining a good sized fleet, you'll be regularily reviewing the computer record for what is upcoming. Everybody is different in their habits, but I find that in my "private" fleet, labelling fuel filters, trani filters, air filters..... is a good direct reminder whenever you are under the hood.

Can't say that I've tried labelling an exhaust pipe , but I have to admit to being impressed about how well the label material stands up.
