I have been looking for a tractor for quite some time and have had a hard time making my mind up. I have found a 5610 with 1100 hours on it and it has a FEL. It is in excellent shape. Paint is not fading, no leaks and pretty good tires.

What's a reasonable price for it?

I have been told since day one that if I get a FEL that I need to get a 4WD. Now I have folks telling me that if I get a big enough tractor that I won't need a 4WD. Do I need to keep looking for a 4wd or is the 5610 big enough and heavy enough I won't have any trouble? I own 27 acres so I will be doing mainly bush hogging, landscape work, and some land clearing. Nothing major, but there are some brush thickets I need to clear out. Mainly pushing up bruch, etc.

Any thoughts?

A 5610 is a hoss i would think it would be fine with 2 wheel drive using a fel. How much are they asking ?

The 5610 is a good machine but is not really heavy enough to be pushing out large clumps of brush as a 2wd. With the right ground conditions though it will but if the ground is too wet or too dry you will be fighting it.

The old Ford TLB we have is just 2wd and for loader work it is not the greatest unless you are on solid ground. If the ground is wet then forget it.

5610 is a good tractor but a little gutless , 7600-7610 would be something to look for .

The 56xx thru the 76xx are good basic machines.

The need for 4wd should be dictated by uses.. and your landscape. If you plan on alot of loader work and have hills.. 4wd is real handy.

What do you consider 'landclearing'? Pulling a few scrub oaks and getting rid of some thicket and bramble? No problem... Clearing an established stand of trees? Hire it out or buy a bulldozer.. use it.. then sell it and then buy the correct tractor for the rest of your needs.

Tractors aren't bulldozers.. and HD landclearing is tough on them..

Well, that 5610 sold before I could get the guy the money. He was asking $14.5k for it.

I have found a 6610 with 1,131 hours on it. Haven't seen it in person but it is a one owner and at a JD ownership. They are asking $13.9k.

It says it is a "Series II". What is a "Series II"?

As far as the land clearing goes, I am not planning on pushing up trees. My plan is to pile up brush that is scattered about. Hopefully I can get a grapple bucket with whatever I purchase. My uncle just got one for his 6000 Mahindra and loves it.

Another question...please excuse my ignorance...what is the difference in a live and independent PTO?

Series two is just a designation to tell you that it has been updated and is slightly different then the original 6610. My 7710-II is quite similar to the 7710 but it has a better cab and has the nice black stripe decal. It is similar to New Holland putting the A designation on their tractors. The TN became the TN-A, TL went to a TL-A as they updated the tractor.

Does the 6610 have a cab or loader? FWA? Just for reference, my 7710-II cost $14k and is 2wd with cab and had almost 5k hours. But the tractor was in beautiful shape and when you looked at it and drove it you would swear it only had 1000 hours.

No cab, just ROPS. Yes, it has FEL.

There is a 7600 about 1 mile from our house but it has oaver 8k hours on it. Original everything, 1 owner, etc. They are asking $7k for it. No cab and no FEL. It belonged longtime farmer and he died about 2 years ago. Now his wife has it for sale. The 8k hours scare me though.

Nothing wrong with a 7600.. but it's hours are getting int he area where you may start needing work.

13.9 for a good 6610II isn't too bad.

i paid 18K for my 7610s ( S series came afer the II series ).. had about 6XX hours on it and some minor sheet metal damage... it's a work horse..

Re: your question of live / independent pto.

Independent pto is live..

Live pto means you can clutch the drivetrain and keep the pto spinning. Prime example of a live pto is a tractor with a 2 stage clutch.. you press the clutch half way to stop the tractor from moving.. and the rest of the way to disconnect the pto. Independent pto systems are -usually- not effected by the foot clutch.. though I have certaintly seen examples, both antique and modern that are. Essentially an ind pto is one that is controlled by a seperate pto clutch with either a mechanical or hydraulic actuator.. etc.
