I am not sure exactly which model winch it is, but it is a 6 something and looks very similar to the JL601 I see on Farmi's website.

It's probably twenty years old and has been sitting a while.

I am interested in hearing about other owner's experiences addressing any of the issues it arrived with.

I know this is useless without pictures, so I'll get some shortly.

It needs the "bearings" repacked, the bearings on the back of the drum axle.

It would be nice to find a manual for it.

It probably needs a new cable, but I have a brand new cable from another cragslist score.

It needs a new PTO shaft, it came with only the back half.

It would be nice to straighten the significant bend in the stand foot, better yet, make a pair that attached to the draft link holes.

It needs all the control ropes replaced, they rotted away while it sat.

I have to figure out the right way to attach it too my cat 1 3ph. It is intended for Cat 2, but does have cat 1 holes for draft links.

I know this winch is way oversized for my little JD4320. But at least it will stay well planted.

And if I decide it's too much for me, If I make it operational, I am sure I can sell it for more than I bought it for

Tear it down, not many parts and you can replace worn parts, after that you have 30 years to the next round.

Might have a manual as PDF.

Here's some pictures for general condition as I got it
Top priorities I think are
-repacking the bearings and looking for any wear items in the drive/drum assembly
-maybe put a new cable in
-addressing the 3ph attachment. Maybe as easy as bushings...

Darn nice find!!! That's on my wish list but they are never for sale down here. Cable doesn't look too bad. Congrats on the purchase!!!

Hope you make a project thread when you pull it apart.

I finally did some work on it this weekend.
The biggest challenge so far was getting the engaging mechanism off the back of the drum axle.
It is reverse threaded onto the shaft and I had to get the rusty bolts off the back cover plate (1-1/8 wrench) and the axle nut off the front (1-7/16). Liquid wrench and 36" pipe extension on the wrench. My dad would call that a `Persuador'.
Now that I have it apart I understand how the mechanism works. It is 2 heavy disks about 4" dia and 1" thick. On the mating sides, there are three ramped pockets milled into both discs. Three tapered rollers ride in the pockets. The disc against back plate is fixed by two pins from the back plate and is reverse threaded onto the drum axel. The other disk has an engagement lever, spins on the drum axel and pushes against the rear drum bearing. When the engagement lever rotates the disk, the two disks get pushed apart by the rollers and the engagement disk pushes the drum/clutch against the flywheel to get the drum spinning. The flywheel is driven by a chain off a sprocket on the end of the PTO Shaft.
I probably could have used it as it was, but it didn't hurt to clean out the old grease and repack the drum bearings.
I should have pulled the cable out first, though as I couldn't get drum off to repack the other set of bearings. I'll have do it all over again when I have the drum empty.

Sounds like you are getting into it in good fashion. Just remember that as tempting as it is don't put much oil if any on the chain as it will easily migrate to the clutch and cause you a problem. It is real good you took the time to get the clutch engagement rollers and discs cleaned out. Caked up grease and dirt in there is very bad because the rollers won't roll and just wear flat.

All those Farmi mechanisms are similar. If you haven't yet, go to their site download a manual on a similar sized winch. There is a lot of info and parts diagrams in them that will help you figure things out.

Thanks for the tips. Yes, I downloaded the manual for a JL601. It's not exactly the same, mine only has one parking stand in the center, but it is very close and the working parts that matter have been the same.

I saw your tip about the chain oil and won't make that mistake.
