Farm accident kills 4-year-old




A 4-year-old Rock Island boy unexpectedly lost his life Friday, Dec. 14 in Fayette County.

Cody Steve Kutach passed away on Saturday, Dec. 15 following a tragic accident that occurred on his grandfather's property in Fayette County, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

According to a family member Cody was enjoying a day of pecan gathering with his grandfather when he slipped off the pecan shaker and was run over. Investigators said they got the call from the Weimar hospital around 4:46 p.m. on Friday. The incident is still under investigation, according to Lt. David Beyer, but at this time officials believe it to be an accident.

"There are details that still need to be looked in and we are still verifying stories," said Lt. Beyer.

I don't see any room for a passanger

As with tractors, I would assume there are a substantial number of different machines used as pecan shakers. I know of one large commercial pecan orchard at which the owner built his own shaker on the chassis or frame of an old International pickup truck. There's lot of "room" where a person besides the operator could be on it but I don't recall any "safe" place for a passenger.
