Went to toss a new air filter into our 2000 Civic.
Found a manuf. defect on the one my buddy ordered into his shop for me. You could see 2 indentations in the ends of the pleats where the filter had been fixtured at the factory, on 2 opposing sides of the filter.
Even I can live with some minor dents in the ends of the pleats, but you could see, mostly on one side, where the peaks of the pleats were abraded as this filter took off down a high speed manuf. line. Too high a clamp force on the fixture ? Bad timing between fixture release and line moving ? - just guessing, but from an automation standpoint I can see the problem happening.
Was the media worn all the way through ? I can't say for sure, but already have enough things that keep me awake at night, so I just sent it back.
That Fram CA8040 from a wholesaler was Made In Canada. Later, CA8040's I checked on a retail shelf were Made In Mexico - they were fine.
Altho I ended up buying a Purolater Classic air filter, I'm not posting this to be anti-Fram. I actually like the Fram design a bit better than the 'Classic, and have had good luck with these ExtraGuard filters in the past.
I'm just posting this as Caveat Emptor - between high speed manufacturing lines, and JIT delivery, even a half a day of faulty production can put a lot of compromised parts into the market. A while ago I posted a thread about a problem with a Fleetguard air filter - it can happen w. any manufacturer.
