Here are some photos of the homemade log splitter I was given.

Looks like someone unloaded their headaches on you. I think scrap is about $0.07 per pound now.......

I don't know, the long hydraulic hoses alone are worth the price he paid. :) One man's trash is another man's treasure. I say good acquisition!

If it is currently not in an operable condition, it may require some work on your part in getting it working again. If you have the skills required to get it operating again, then you will have a piece of equipment to help facilitate your firewood chores. Best of Luck in your endeavor and project. Keep us posted on the results.

Ok hooked it up today and ran it. Someone has to be in tractor engaging the hydraulics for the splitter to work. Tractor has an o-ring that needs replacing as it was leaking profusely when using the splitter. On the splitter, valves were leaking and the main hydraulic cylinder has a small drip. Definitely needs a thorough welding job as a small round of wood had it buckleing under the pressure.

So is it worth salvaging or should I just by the 22 Ton huskee from Tractor Supply and be done with it.

my initial thought would be that since you are asking this question the answer for you might be that it would be easier/better to buy a functional unit at the current time. it's not a personal attack or a comment on the condition of the equipment, but since you ask this it would seem to indicate that you aren't real familiar with resurrecting basket cases made out of tired iron.

a wood splitter is a fairly simple project, but it looks like this one would warrant a redesign from the ground up. the push block appears to be held in place by guides placed on a wide and thin piece of plate that sits on the beam. the block guides should be attached around the beam itself. i'm betting that is the cause of the flex. it looks like you have all the parts, but you just require a little quality time with a torch and welder. it all depends on whether you feel confident in your metalworking skills.

to me having to engage the hydraulics form the tractor is a function of the tractor hydraulics and not the splitter. someone far more versed in the correct terminology will likely chime in as to what this is called and what you need. you do however have a lot of nice pieces, assuming it all works - two cylinders, two valves, hoses, far more metal than you need to build two splitters, etc.

I am surprised that the hydraulics haven't failed due to the water pipe fittings. I also don't think that I would let fluid from the log splitter into my tractor from an unknown source. You may have already contaminated your tractor fluid.

I think the TSC 3pt splitter would be a better investment. I am thinking about $700.

Mudbug.....

Cut your losses and go buy a new unit. It will give you years of service with minimum attention to it. There is something to be said for buying a commercial unit and you working it, rather than a home made unit working YOU!

Maybe Myyaz will come take it off your hands!!

Good luck with your decision, I know what I would do!
