I'm finacially not able to go out and buy the latest and greatest MS product anymore. Anyone out there have any experience with the freeware word processing/spreadsheet software packages? I needed to do a documentand and wanted to make a table with a autosum formula in a word processor. I finally had to switch over to the spreadsheet to get done what I wanted. I was turning in some reciepts to get reimbursed and wanted a numbered bullet point table with a autosum formula to total the column. I used the Google online package and it did what I needed when I needed it done and I was wondering who else uses the freeware? Yes, I'm aware there can be some formatting issues when trying to open a "Word" document in a "nonword" package. bjr

The company I work for has an IT guy who loves to cheap out on us. Most of our machines have Windows Office suite. Some of the computers in Production, though, have been using LibreOffice. While I haven't personally used it, the guys who do use it every day spend most of their time complaining about it not working right (won't open, freezes for no reason, etc.). I've watched it go bad on a couple of occasions, and even once had to dodge a flying mouse. I would caution you against that particular product based on that.

I greatly dislike the new subscription-based crud for Windows Office. You actually cannot "go out and buy" it anymore. Unfortunately, it tends to work when you need it. I feel your pain, though. It's not cheap by any means.

I like open office, if it's still available.

Open Office works just fine. It is very similar to the Micro$oft Office 2003 release.

OpenOffice or GoogleDocs

We have been using OpenOffice exclusively for a few years now with great results. If you need it, GIMP is a great alternative to Photoshop.

Libre Office has worked pretty well for me under Linux. In fairness, I don't use it much.

While not exactly free, I would check on eBay for an older version of Office - 2003 or 2007. I still use 2003 on my personal computer, however I had to download an add on from Microsoft so I can view documents in newer versions of office - free on their web sight.

I also work for one the largest insurance companies in the U.S. And they use 2007 version.
