Freewheel on a hydraulic motor

I am not sure if you can freewheel a geroler style motor without damage occurring to the motor. My recommendation is contact the distributor or manufacturer of the motor.

All of these forestry trailers with hydraulic assist will have some sort of way to disconnect the motor from the tires. As Oldnslo said, you don't want to freewheel an hydraulic motor, specially when if you're driving on the road at road speeds.

I've seen a couple different systems. Some use have a small hydraulically powered wheel in between the axles that raises and lowers hydraulically. When lowered, the small wheel engages on the lugs of the tires to provide traction. Another system is some sort of dog clutch that is hydraulically controlled to engage/disengage. Can also be done mechanically obviously.

Another option, but not all tractors have this, is to use the PTO in Ground speed mode. You just have to figure out all the ratios so all axles spin equally.

Thanks for all the info. I wanted to try and avoid the arms which disconnect the drive if possible. This looks like the perfect solution, but I havent found a price yet :

I need to work out sizing, etc.. yet. It will be powered by a petrol motor with hyd pump

Hello again, I now have 2 options from different suppliers. The first is the parker motors above, they look totally perfect, but the price is a little crazy. The other option is to use standard wheel motors and use a valve like this one :
The supplier says that it has a freefloat position which allows A and B to go back to the tank. I am tempted to give it a go, he was very confident that it will work.

This brings me to sizing. I will be using a honda engine with a 4.7cc pump. It should be giving 14 litres at 200 bar pressure. I would like 4 wheel motors and I would like around 5kw to each wheel. Wheel RPM the slower the better, so 5-10 RPM would be totally fine. How would I go about sizing the motors for this ?

Thanks for all your help
