Long term storage is great. That being said, if you don't use it you can lose it. Rotate the food you have stored. Use some and replace it. Don't store anything you and yours will not like to eat. Cook your meals from the "stored' food, that way nothing should be wasted.
We keep a little ahead by buying a few extra cans of what we like. That way we always have a week or so's worth on hand. I think anyone that lives 20 or so miles from a store does this without even thinking about it. Have fun and stay safe....

" I can't imagine how the C Rations, made in the 40's or 50's but eaten in the 60's and 70s, tasted. :confused2: "

Dan, I was in the Army from 1966 to 1972 and when we were in the field we ate C rations that were packaged in the early 1940's, and I remember looking at the dates on the box and cans and thinking - this was packaged before I was even born....They were all good....I especially liked the ham and Lima beans, boned chicken and ham and scrambled eggs....all in a can we would heat in drums of boiling water....I was one of the few Southern boys in the outfit so I had plenty of my favorites and the northern boys all ate the stuff I did not like...spaghetti etc. :)

I was fact checking my memory for my post and ran across this on Wikipedia:

The C ration was, in general, not well liked by U.S. Army or Marine forces in World War II, who found the cans heavy and cumbersome, and the menu monotonous after a short period of exposure.[8][9] There were also inevitable problems with product consistency given the large number of suppliers involved and the pressures of wartime production. When issued to British or other Commonwealth forces formerly issued hardtack and bully beef-type rations, the C ration was initially accepted, but monotony also became a chief complaint after a few days of consumption.[10] Australian forces tended to dislike the C ration, finding the canned food items generally bland, overly soft in texture, and unappealing.[11] Originally intended only for infrequent use, the exigencies of combat sometimes forced supply authorities to make the C ration the only source of sustenance for several weeks in succession. In 1943, a ration board reviewing medical examinations of soldiers after long-term use of Type C rations recommended that they be restricted to a maximum of five continuous days in the absence of supplementation with other rations.[12]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-ration#cite_note-11

The C Ration taste and texture issues I had read about, as well as use up to and past Vietnam. But I never read that long term use of C Rats was not good for you. You can blame that twitching you have had for years on the C Rats. :D:laughing::D:laughing:

Wikipedia mentioned that Ham and Lima beans, while getting bad field reports, was popular. Sounds completely disgusting to me. :confused2::laughing: But then again, a NC favorite food is Brunswick Stew, which is veggies including Lima beans and meat boiled into a gross mess. :confused2::D Not for me! :D

Later,
Dan

So now I know why I hold my mouth like I do and it explains the twitching too....Thanks Dan...I guess I ate too much of the Ham & Lima beans...:D:laughing: I truly would like a can of them now...except they would be way too old now for even me to eat...:licking:
