I have a friend in the market for a Yanmar 4X4with FEL. He has narrowed his search to the following:
1601D
1610D
1700D
Since he has no computer he asked me to get the experts opinion. I have a 1401 and the 3 cyl. sure is quieter. I have been steering him toward the 1610. He will be grateful for this formuns opinions.

I think your steering him right.

I have a 1610D and very happy with it. 950 hours, no major problems, stub axle seal leak from being bound down during delivery, but very simple to fix. Power is better than a Kubota 7300/7400. Drawbacks is tire size and a narrow tractor, so go easy on hillsides if trying to go around. No problem going straight up and down. Get one with ROPS. Be perfect for level to moderate sloped ground. Good dealer here with some available.

I'll put in a vote for the 1601d. Never thought about the need for powershift, but that maybe cause i don't have it to begin with. Either way, both are very fine.

I will cast my vote for a powershift. I started out with a YM2500. Using a box blade and constantly having to clutch and shift the manual transmission will wear you and your back out. Now that I have a 3110D it is so much nicer with powershift. Manual transmissions are fine for straight work like mowing or discing. When you are going to use an FEL or a box that requires changing direction a lot the extra money spent now will be money saved at the chiropractor.

And I will say what I always say when folks call or email. Settle on a dealer first. ALL tractors eventually need parts and service support. Settle on someone you trust, even if distant, then utilize that dealer's experience and knowledge to select a model.
