I have a L2900 GST 4wd that has leaking seals on the front axel at both front tires. The seal is leaking where the stationary part of the axel attaches to the pivoting part (to allow the front wheels to turn).
Is this a common problem?
How difficult is it to fix these your self?
Approximately how much do dealers charge?
How long can I delay getting this fixed prior to doing any serious dammage to there components?

Thanks for any information!

You can delay it indefinetly as long as you keep the axle filled.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like the knuckle seal. I don't think they are that hard to replace. I replaced one on a Yanmar I used to have and it wasn't hard at all. I figure you take the wheel off, remove a few bolts, drop the housing and remove the seal, clean everything and put the new seal in. It looks like my 2800 is similar to the way my old Yanmar was designed. Like I said, I could be way off here too.

Some of the L2900's had this problem and Kubota issued a service notification for those under warranty. It would depend on the year of your tractor. I'd call the dealer who should be familiar with the problem/recall. At the very least you will determine the cost of the parts or the entire job.

You're looking at about 40.00 in parts per side. Yes, it is a very common repair. The only problem with keeping the fluid filled is if it leaks out it will leak in. If you never plan on getting in muck or water then you would be ok.

If it is like the one I recently did on an L2550, then it is quite an
easy job. You DO have to have a snap ring pliers with a 90-degree
bend.

Kubota had an upgrade for the seal for this tractor, and it is supposed
to exclude mud better. I really appreciated the use of O-rings instead of
gaskets, unlike the JDs (Yanmars) I have done.

Dfkrug,
How did you begin the dissassembly,
From the bottom, or seperating the axel at the vertical joint?
Were your bearings okay?
I had to replace the front left side wheel bearings a while back and wondering what to expect.

Remove the hub w/ ring gear first if everything is clean. Or you
can remove the whole assy from the axle housing. Do the latter if
you did not wash all the dirt off first. I like to pressure-wash
the whole area before any dissassembly. This is not always
practical if the tractor is already on stands in a garage or barn.
Separating the king pin from the rest of the hub is the only part
requiring snap ring pliers.

My bearings were fine. If they are not, you can buy standard ball
bearings like the one visible in my photo from a bearing supplier like
VXB.com.
