front axle fluid

I own a 1984 4WD Mahindra 2810. When I purchased it last year it had 432 hours on it. I changed all fluids on it and have loved every minute on it. I filled the front axle to the top, maybe a little too much. After operating I noticed that when sticking my finger in the opening I could not feel and fluid. Ok, not a problem, maybe it had to circulate and completely go where all needed to go since I completely drained it. I refilled it again, this time not to the top but just to the top of the axle. Again upon checking after running I noticed the fluid was lower, however not as low this time. My question is what should be the correct fill level? How much should I expect the fluid to lower upon use. I am not seeing an evidence of a leak anywhere.

Do you have owners manual?? Check it for correct oil level. If you don't have, please post picture of where you check oil, and what oil level is at. Even though I don't own a Mahindra, I'll try to help if I can.:thumbsup:

Thanks. I will not be able to do so until next weekend. Have to work and only time I can go to farm is weekend. Thankfully I hope to move there soon and enjoy the peaceful surroundings instead of this city life.

I keep my Iseki just above the axel. After a few small seal leaks someone on here suggested Lucas Hub Oil. I filled it with that and all leaks stopped. Yours may be different but my friend has a Yanmar and a Kubota. He fills his the same.. Your fluid must leak somewhere, Maybe while driving?

The axle case on my Kioti has a fill port on the top and a level-check plug on the side...very much like the fill-check combo on the gear box of my brush mower. I'm willing to be corrected on this, but, as long as there is a significant air space left (for heat expansion), I can't see how just eyeball "filling it to the top" could hurt. Note, however, that critical proviso; if there is absolutely zero expansion room for the fluid as it heats, there could be trouble.

Every FWA tractor I've seen or been arounf has both a fill plug and a level plug. Some level plugs are also a securement bolt. I'd consult the owners manual first.
