Anyone know what is the best for the front axle? I have a seal leaking and I need to keep it topped off.

The manual for my MT372, which is very similar to your tractor says to use gear oil GL-4 or better. 75w to 90w depending on ambient temperature. A GL-4 80w90 should probably do it just fine.

I am attaching a page with an oil chart from the 373 operator's manual, which I assume is pretty much the same chart as Skylarkguy was quoting.

Note that in addition to the gear oil already mentioned, one can also use certain hydraulic oils in the front axle. Since a reportedly reliable source says to disregard the manual and to NOT use gear oil in the trans.*, and since it is apparently OK to use hydraulic oil in both the trans & the axle, I have elected to use the hydraulic oil (in this case, a "303" oil) in both to avoid having all these different oils in different places. Maybe that's a good idea, and maybe not, but that's what I did.

Q: My manual says to use gear oil in the transmission. Is this right?

A: No. The manuals were incorrect. Most Mitsubishi tractors use a single system in which the transmission uses the same fluid as the hydraulics. Use Universal Tractor Fluid, AW46 Tractor Hydraulic Oil, JD Type 303 Special Purpose oil or the equivalent. An exception to this is the Satoh S650G, S670 and ST2500. These tractors have a split system with a separate hydraulic reservoir

Since it is leaking, would I not be better off using a thicker oil?

I cannot answer that question.

If it were me, I would either use what I normally use, or i would look into replacing the seal. Whether I would replace the seal or not would depend upon who bad it leaks, and how often I need to use the tractor.

I personally would not use anything "thicker" than the book recommended in the axle.

I plan on using the recommended gear lube, I use the tractor for mowing weekly. With that I cannot tear into it to replace the seal yet.

I am a little leery of using the hydraulic fluid since it is thinner. I will use the gear lube, at least until I can buy and install the seals.
