Well, the first thing to discover is whether the front axle requires gear oil or hydraulic fluid. My 2305 requires the former and my 4610 the latter. I don't know the 4520. If gear oil, any name brand 80W-90 rated GL-5 will do. I like Shell Spirax HD and Chevron Delo ESI. If hydraulic fluid, any name brand meeting John Deere specs J20C or J20D will do. J20D is synthetic. I use Chevron 1000 THF, which meets J20C.

To be clear.. you are refering to a UTF oil.. not a plain hyd ( jack) oil..

many new owners might not know that UTF oil is differnt than hyd oil.. like aw32.. You wouldn't want someone to put aw32 in a front drive train cirrect?

I think he means HydroGuard - Hydraulic fluid. My 3720 takes Hy Guard in the front axle and my little 2305 takes the much thicker Gear oil. :O)

Doesn't make much sense to me.

Yep, or an equivalent that meets the JD brand's spec.

Aside from engine oil, which is a universe all its own, I've always found it easier to just get the other lubes from the local J-D guy.

There are some long discussions here on TBN regarding oils, lubes and the pros and cons of different brands as well as lengthy discourses on synthetics vs "dino" lubes.

As Soundguy and RWEST state -- whatever you use make sure it meets the specs required in your owner's manual.

You didn't indicate where you and your tractor reside. That alone, can play a big part in what you use.

It's been 15-25 below up here the past 4-5 days, now. I want something that maintains some measure of flowability at those temps and use synthetic oils in both my crankcase and the front differential. Mobil 1 and Rotella T.

Hope this helps.

Again.. you have to be carefull calling those UTF oil 'hydraulic fluid'. they are a combination fluid.. hyds, trans, diffy.. etc. Just calling them a 'hydraulic fluid' might make a newbie think they can go down to walmart and buy a 5g pail of jack oil and think they are doing good.

Transdraulic yes.. hydraulic?? not descriptive enough.
