Kubota BX2660
I was doing the 50 hour mntc. yesterday on my BX2660 and checked the front axle oil level, and sure enough there was not enough oil to touch the stick. When I bought the oil for the tranny and engine a few days earlier I asked the dealer what type of oil to put in the front axle and they told me any type of oil is fine. Well all I had available was some Kubota 10-30 so I used that .. the question is since the manual says it should be something like 80 or 90 weight .. how long can I let this go ? I kinda wonder why the dealer said I could put anything in there to begin with .. does anybody think it actually matters ?

Change to the correct gear oil. No more than it holds it is not that expensive.

If you do a "search", you'll find this a common problem on the BX2660. I drained and replaced my axle fluid with Kubota 80-90 gear oil. Originally, at the 50 hour check is when I discovered the lack of lubricant. The dealer said to put a quart of Super UDT in as that's what came from the factory. This is what I did until changing over at 160 hrs. As I understand it, there is no harm done. Mike

I started that big thread when my BX2660 had very low oil at 50 hours.

After searching and discussing extensively, I settled on 80W90 gear oil (grade GL-5).

I believe 10W30 motor oil will be inadequate for axle high pressure loads. I would change that ASAP.

Your comment that the manual specifies 80 or 90 or something. That is referring to gear oil which is a different number than engine oil. Common 80W-90 gear oil falls somewhere between SAE 30 and SAE 50 engine oil when comparing viscosity. My L5740 for example is shipped with Super UDT which is fairly close to 10W-30 engine oil in viscosity. The manual says to use UDT, Super UDT or 80W-90 gear oil. I use 75W-90 synthetic gear oil.

Consider what you did a "cleaning" flush and put in 80w-90 gear oil.:D

When we got our BX23 I don't think the oil in the front axle had ever been changed as the tractor only had 285 hours on it. If that was the case it probably had Super UDT in it. There was a small leak at the seals on the right side. I changed the oil to 75W-90 synthetic gear oil and the leak went away. It did take a few hours of operation for the quantity on the dip stick to stablize. I checked it quite often after changing it and had to add some a couple of times. It wasn't leaking out that I could see, I think it was just finding new places to hide inside the housing.

Yet another thread destined to thrash around in confusion between viscosity and film strength (-:

Can't beat TBN for entertainment value when it comes to ~Loooooooobs~

Right. I like the 75w-90 synthetic, just for those subzero mornings up here. Our local Family Farm and Home sells the synthetic for the same price as dino.

Thanks for all of the input .. I'm going to change it out this weekend. I usually follow all of the recommendations to a tee .. but the dealer sort of threw me off on this when he said I could use anything .. and he's been a dealer/service shop for a long long time..oh well.
