Hi
I am trying to remove the centre pin of the front axle beam on my 1970 Massey 165. What is the best way to go about this??
Do I need to drop the mount it is attached to?

Any advise is greatly appreciated
Thanks

It should be as simple as taking the weight off the axle ,just jack the front up so that theres no weight on the pin.Remove the bolt that holds the pin in and pull the pin out towards the front of the tractor of course if you haven't already done so you have to remove the front bumper/weight support bracket first. When I removed the pin on my 175 I made a puller out of a long treaded rod that I put into the center of the pin,put a nut on the backside near the oil pan then used a small plate at the front end and just kept tightening the nut on the front pulling the pin out of the housing and axle.I'am sure if you had a slide hammer or something like that would work as well.Hope this helps.

So I replaced the front axle beam with a good quality second hand one.
After thorough cleaning I primed with rattle can primer and sprayed with synthetic paint. Got the front wheels back on and powerwashed the 165 in prep for spraying. However the paint on the beam lifted off completely.
I know the washer was high pressure but didn't expect that! It was sprayed a month ago.
Any hints as to why that happened?
Imagine if I had the full spray job done!

Are you using a gas powered pressure washer. They will indeed strip paint if you get too close. After pressure washing. You want to wash it down with a good grease cutting detergent. Either blow it dry or wipe it down dry. Make sure it's dried out a few hours before putting a good self etching primer on it. The primer needs to cure before putting the finish paint one it. If it was painted with enamel if takes weeks for it to cure to full hardness. If each coat wasn't allowed to cure properly you basically have soft paint next to the metal and hard on the outside. Very easy to strip with a good pressure washer.

Thanks for the reply!
Yes it was gas powered. And it was enamel type paint!
How long would the primer need to cure?
Would the paint have hardened over time if left. Average daytime temp here is around 50 to 55 degF
I fancy doing the tractor myself but not if I end up with a poor job. I was going to get a good body shop guy to do the red panels.
Would two pack with hardner be a better job at this temp?

I add hardener to mine. If using hardener be sure to heed all safety precautions. Hardener will speed drying time a bit. It will also give a better shine. I use a 4:1 paint to reducer.

The paint would harden over time. In the old days when a car was painted with enamel, they would put the car in an auto oven which had heat lamps to heat up the paint and drive out the part that keeps it soft. Sorry not a chemist.

The cooler the ambient air temp the slower paint dries. Hardener comes in cans. Small half pint cans. You don't add much to your reduced paint. You will however have to use than paint soon. Once hardener is added it starts a reaction and is ready to use in about thirty minutes.

One could use a auto paint which is handled differently and more durable. But the cost of paint goes way up. The end choice is yours.

What did you clean it with? If there was still a hint of grease, it will come off. Was the paint And primer compatible?

Hi William
I painted on paint stripper and rinsed after a few hours and repeated. Then wirebrushed with a 4" grinder. Cleaned then with Gunk spray and wiped with meth spirits(wasnt sure if I should have used this though). The primer seems to be ok. The paint looked fine and was dry to touch.
I think its too cool and damp to spray the tractor now unless i get a good heater in the shed.
