The efficiency of these tillers as described would depend on several things in my opinon. Size, weight, of the tractor and also the direction of the tines. Reverse travel on the tines tend to allow the tines to dig in better rather than 'push' you forward. My neighbor has the one made by DR. I thought he was nuts and paid too much for it cause you could get a PTO unit from Tractor Supply for the same kind of money etc. But he didnt have a tractor like my BX 24 that could handle it so he is pulling this behind a beefy garden tractor (JD) and it has a remote control battery operated depth control with forward tine action. He soon discovered that the trick to making this work well was to add additional weight to the device. Now it works well, digs deeper, etc. The feature I liked about it was that you could offset the tiller so that you were not running over already tilled areas. I still could not justigy the price but hey, what works for him is a good thing and he is a happy neighbor.... THAT in itself is a blessing! :laughing:

I rented aJohn deere tractor with a 3 pt. rototiller once . I put that in sod set it as deep as it would go and it was instant garden soil. very impressive

The reason I was seeking advice was to do a very light or shallow cultivation of newly emerging weeds, like 3 to 4 days after a rain. I have already worked the soil with my plow, cultivator and 5 foot rototiller on my MF tractor. The plants are in rows and I waanted to jump on the weeds before they got started. I tried hooking a narrow front time tiller (16") to the front of a baha motor bike but it was to cumbersome, I don't do well with the pull behind straddling or the full row type because when I look back I have on occasion taaken out half a row.

What about something like this from Hoss Wheel Hoe | Wheel Cultivator | Discounted packages You can do it by hand or perhaps rig up your own version and try driving with it. If you could somehow replace the wheels/tires on your lawnmower with old steel wagon wheels you could straddle rows for a long time as the plants grew.

Iv'e found that in my plowed, tilled and planted garden, running down the rows with a front time tiller is a one handed affair. I do it weekly so the ground never gets compacted. I till in my grass clippings, the neighbors chicken and horse poop, and any pruning or bad vegetables. These will be my planting rows the next season. At the end of growing season I till in all the leaves I've gathered in the fall.
