I have a TC33D with industrial tires on it. In the summer the front tires tear up my lawn a little when I mow. Can I get another set of wheels and put turfs on the front just for summer mowing? If I can, where could I get some used rims?

Thanks

You will have to be careful; front and rear tires have to be "matched: correctly for the FWD to operate correctly. The lead /lag ratio must be maintained. If you change the rolling circonference must be the same. You will find that matching R-4's with turfs is a little harder than you think. Do you have a FEL? Turfs sidewalls are not strong and flex severely when loading bucket.

Yes, I have a 7308 loader.

If you can buy another set of rims, you can then get the diameter measurement of your R4 tire, and then go to the tire web pages and get a 6 or 8 ply truck tire, with smooth tread tha will fit your 16.5 rim. You could also go to some of the tractor part sellers and possibly find a rim that will bolt up to your bolt pattern, even in 15" or 16" size, select your width, and then once again go to the tire web sites and find a tire your like in 6 or 8 ply. You need to becareful about the rim offset for the front wheels to clear when steering. If you can live with out 4WD for mowing, then stop worrying about wheel diameter, just leave it in 2WD. Even with the front over driven about 2% in 4WD, a smooth, slightly smaller in diameter front tire won't hurt your drive trian. It will either be almost matched to the ratio for 4WD, or will slip enough on the grass not to "wind up" the drive train. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Where can I find used rims for my tractor?

I can't mow out of 4 wheel due to my terrain.

If I can get used NH OEM rims, I can then get the right size 6-8 ply truck tire and it should not affect my 4 wheel drive system, correct?

Bob,

There are certainly others who know much more about this than I do but I will share what I have found out over the last few weeks. I have the Titan OEM turf tires and I have been trying to find an industrial tire to swap out for loader work. Since I will be doing most work in FWD I need to match the existing tire specifications as closely as possible.

Besides the normal tire clearance issues the two important measurements for a FWD tractor are the Rolling Circumference and the Static Loaded Radius, in that order. I assume that if you do not use FWD with the tires on then you just need to find a tire approximately the same height. Another poster had stated that the ratio of the Static Loaded Radius (height to center of axle) of the back/front tires should ideally be 1.59 with a range of 1.56 – 1.62 acceptable. I have not been able to determine the Final Drive Ratio but this should not be critical if using 2wd.

The tractor manufacturer tire web sites I have found are as follows: Firestone Ag , Goodyear Ag , Titan

They have all of this information and more. Note that Michelin did not appear to have sizes for CUT’s.

Good luck…Derek

Bob,

There's another recent thread exactly about this only he's going from turf's to R4's. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I guess you could check ebay or other classified's for used rim's though I can't imagine it'd be much more just to get 2 new rims from ur local dealer.

I think I paid around $300 for 2 new rims with Triton Trac Loader 25x8.50-14 R4 tires.

Bob,

I'm not sure switching to turfs will solve your problem. I have a TC24D with turfs and if I leave it in 4WD while mowing, even the turfs tear up the lawn, regardless of conditions. And that is with the FEL off to keep the front end light. The slightest bit of mismatch would probably be even more destructive to the lawn. I would bet the only difference between the R4s and turfs will be the size of the clumps of sod they pull up. Any way you can mow in 2WD, at least where you are making your sharp turns? Might be worth a try before buying extra tires.

If you do switch over to turfs, I have found my Titans to be strong enough for my loader work as long as they are inflated to about 18 lbs or a little more. R4s are certainly tougher especially for abrasion and puncture resistence, but I have maxed out the load capacity on mine for a lot of work building driveways out of crusher run and never had a problem with the sidewalls squatting excessively.

Good luck.

The front tires should turn about 5% faster than the rear tires in 4wd. This is the lead lag people speak of. Like Brad said- Make sure you are not mowing in 4wd.
