So as the topic says the front wheels locked up and won't turn in 2 or 4 wheel drive. If you lift the tractor up with the loader and get the wheels free they will spin freely but in opposite directions. Anyone with any thoughts as to what it might be?

And if you moves both wheels in same direction it is locked?

Sounds like front differential gear problem to me.

On my 2400H the input shaft bearings went out and caused the wheels to randomly lock.

On the 2400 this shaft goes inside of a sheet metal cover tube so you has to remove this cover to find the problem.

As the second owner of a low-time 2400H (only 70 hours), do you mind telling me how much time you had when those bearings died? Was it just time for them to go or was the front axle low on fluid or what? Since I'm a tractor newb, I figured I should learn as much as I can from the experience of others! Thanks, and sorry, OP, for the thread drift!

It could be a ring and pinion or input shaft bearing issue, it is also a possibility that it is in the tractor output to the front drive.
The only way to be sure is to remove the driveshaft to the front end if the front end is still locked up with the driveshaft removed it is in the front axle,
if it is back to normal it is in the tractor drive end.
Good Luck.

I believe it was less than 50 hrs on the clock & not low on oil either. Dealer & I both suspected faulty assembly from the factory. Complete new axle was installed and around 530 hrs on machine now with no problems.
