Fellow Posters,

I have a question regarding my new 1072E Frontier RFM. In previous posting, I mentioned that I had a JD 3720 mid frame tractor and bought a 1060S Frontier (Woods) SD RFM. I really liked the mower, but I mow a neighborhood athletic field that is about six acres, and it took a while. I spoke with my dealer about increasing the cut to a 72" RFM, and bought the above deck. There are many things I like about it; the PTO is much easier to attach, and it is quiet, to name two things. The problem is that it does not cut as well (not NEARLY as well) as my previous mower. This mower seems much more affected by the tracks left by the tractor and leaves some uncut grass at the edges of the swath. This can be corrected by going back over it, but that defeats the purpose of the larger deck. I mow at about 4.0-5.0 mph usually, slowing more than this does not help that much. I also know the blade tip speed is about 1000 fpm slower than the deck I traded, even though it is larger (which seems to generally increase blade tip speed). I believe it is about 14,700 fpm. The other issue I have noticed is the mower bounces a lot more than did the previous one I had. I know it is a lighter gauge deck, and I wonder is this is the reason. This, of course, also affects cut a bit. Cut quality is pretty important to me; can I salvage this deck's quality by changing blades (I do not know what TYPE blades this deck has) or should I just go pick up my old deck again, and alot more time. I appreciate the advice. I have only had the deck two weeks, I may still be able to make a change if I do not take too long. My dealer is good to me; I have done a lot of business with him and I think he would try to correct the problem, provided I know what to tell him.

John…
You might check for high lift blades, that should help. It is too bad that tip speed is down, that is going to be hard to overcome. Check if lowering your mower tire pressure will help with the bounce problem. If the wheels are tubeless you may need to get tubes for them to allow low pressure. Good luck, KennyV.
