I know I'm small fry when it comes to buying a tractor, but I'm getting frustrated with the dealers in my area. I am looking at the x500 series or the 1 series SUB. I have physically been to three dealers. None of them had any x500 series in stock, and only one of them had a 1 series, and he didn't recommend it. He wanted to sell me a ZTR. I want to put my hands on an x500, 530, 540, and hopefully one of the x700 series and 1 series. I need to compare. I wrote JD headquarters and they graciously sent me a list of dealerships in the area, as if I did not know how to use their website already.

Anyone in Louisiana or East Texas know of a dealership that has these units in stock. I'm ready to give up and buy Walmart.

I don't know them from Adam, but google led me to this, they seem to have some turf / residential stores that may be able to help. More ag releated dealers don't usually stock or know as much about the residential / turf stuff.

Sunshine Equipment - South Louisiana's John Deere Dealer

A History Of Service And Commitment
Sunshine Equipment Company, Inc., has its corporate offices in Donaldsonville and is a Louisiana Corporation with a history dating back to 1960. Initially named Waguespack Tractor Company, it evolved from a joint venture between the John Deere Company, local farmers and Waguespack Tractor Co. It was run as a company branch outlet retailing agricultural equipment to the local sugar cane industry. The original location of Waguespack Tractor Company was 820 Railroad Avenue in downtown Donaldsonville. The business soon out grew its downtown location and moved to an area near the junction of Bayou Lafourche and the Mississippi River. After the Sunshine Bridge was built, the principals of Sunshine Equipment knew that locating the Dealership near the new Bridge would certainly be a great commercial location. This bridge crossing the Mississippi River was built during the administration of Governor Jimmy Davis (song writer of "You Are My Sunshine"), The Sunshine Bridge was the first to provide highway crossing for all the rural parishes surrounding the Donaldsonville area.

Today, our Donaldsonville location has two separate facilities, a retail store complex, and an administrative building. Through our retail store at the Donaldsonville location, we currently service the agricultural, turf, worksite products, and lawn care needs of the area. This retail store is staffed with employees trained and skilled in the Agricultural and Landscape equipment business. Our administrative building next to the Donaldsonville Store houses our corporate offices on the second floor.

In 1983, Sunshine purchased an existing John Deere Consumer Products dealership, Waguespack Machinery, in Napoleonville, La. This dealership was moved in the spring of 1988, to LaPlace, La, a community located about 15 miles west of New Orleans. Today the LaPlace location services the Lawn Care, Turf, and Worksite products of the New Orleans and surrounding areas.

In June of 1988, Sunshine purchased an existing John Deere Agricultural and Consumer Products dealership, Sugar Belt Equipment Company, in Thibodaux, La. Today the Thibodaux location continues to service the Agricultural, Lawn Care, Turf, and Worksite products needs of the Thibodaux, North Terrebonne, and lower Bayou Lafourche areas of South La. This location is approximately 30 miles south-southeast of Donaldsonville.

In the fall of 1987, Sunshine entered into a new venture, John Deere Golf and Turf Products Distribution, which serviced golf courses throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. Then in mid 1988, we expanded further by picking up the Ransoms Turf and Professional Lawn Care Products Distributorship. We further added the Ryan, Cushman Turf Vehicles and Cushman Turf Front Line product lines to our distributorship in 1990, 1991, and 1992 respectively. In the early spring of 1991, we moved our commercial golf and turf product activities to a new location in Prairieville, Louisiana, just on the southeastern edge of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. On 30 September 1997, we moved our downsized Golf and Turf operations back into our Donaldsonville location as the growth into the Golf and Turf industry did not meet the criteria we had laid out in our initial business plan. And finally, in the summer of 1998, we decided to completely exit this sector of the turf business. We sold the Prairieville location in 2006.

In January of 1994, Sunshine's expansion continued, purchasing another existing John Deere Consumer Products dealership, Kathryn's Power Equipment, located in the northeastern Louisiana city of Monroe. The Monroe location serviced the consumer product lawn care needs of suburban and rural areas surrounding Monroe. It also took care of the equipment needs of both golf courses and commercial cutters throughout the northern Louisiana and central Mississippi. During the year 2006 Sunshine痴 business plan to construct a contiguous market area made it necessary to sell the Monroe location in 2007.

In 1995, another expansion was undertaken that involved building a separate two-story administration building to house our corporate offices and to provide leased space for our local Collocated USDA Agencies. Construction began in December of 1995 and was completed early in 1996. The Sunshine Administration building is just next door to our Donaldsonville Store facilities.

In September of 2000, expansion continues as Sunshine was awarded the contract to service the Baton Rouge market area for John Deere Commercial and Consumer Equipment. We purchased the assets of the former John Deere Dealer, Appel Tractors, and have located in their facility in a strip mall on Perkins Road area between Essen Lane and Bluebonnet Boulevard. In 2002, the Dealership was relocated to Airline Highway on the South side of Baton Rouge.

In 2006 Sunshine Equipment purchased the John Deere Commercial and Consumer Products Dealership from Evergreen Tractor in Covington, La. We built a new state of the art 笛ohn Deere Place store in 2008. This John Deere Place Store was the first of its type in Louisiana and it is located on ten acres on Hwy 25 on the North side of Covington, St. Tammany parish. This location serves the needs of the North Shore for sales, parts and service of Commercial and consumer equipment, as well as Commercial worksite. They service seven mass channel locations (Home Depot and Lowes) who sell Deere equipment. Our Covington location sets up the mowers, as well as handling customer repairs on these units.

In 2009; Purchased the John Deere Small Ag and C & CE Dealership from Smith & Smith in Franklinton, La. This location, located in Washington parish, serves the needs of horse breeders, farmers, dairy and homeowners. Hay equipment is especially popular at this Dealership.

Let your fingers do the walking. Call the Dealers on the list provided by John Deere, advise them what you are looking for and what you want to compare and find out if they have the item in stock so you can physically inspect it.

Don't look for a John Deere Dealer to stock every item on your wish list. All the 500 series will be the same size, different motors. The same is true for the 700 series. Water cooled gas engines are quiter than air cooled but cost more. Diesels cost more than gas. A 700 series with a diesel engine is getting close price wise to the 1000 series.

Why did he recommend the ZTR over the 1 series? Seems like the salesman would have to have a really good reason. The ZTRs are nice machines if all you want to do is mow. I didn't even consider one when I was tractor shopping. With my 2000 series tractor I can do the same mowing jobs and a TON more chores / work.

I would avoid the box stores as you will have absolutely zero service after the sale. Plus, most dealerships (at least in my area) are locally owned and operated.

Either way, buying a tractor should be enjoyable and fun. I hope it looks up for you soon.

That's a good question, why did he recommend a ztr? I have a ztr for mowing and a tractor for uh, well... tractoring. I'm lucky to be able to have two machines, but there's a good reason for it, the two jobs are at odds with each other. If all you want to do is cut grass, a commercial ztr is going to out cut a 50 hp Deere with large rear finishing mower. They are faster, more nimble and just do a better job, which is what you'd expect from an expensive machine made to do nothing but cut grass. If just cutting grass describes what you want to do, I agree with the sales guy, buy a ztr. BTW, I also have a 20hp, 48" JD riding mower that I no longer use. This would be the slowest way to cut the grass. It used to take me 3 hours, the ztr takes 1.

I had a JD955 and I have to say, my JD dealership was lousy too. They made you feel that you should be honored to be able to come visit them and they never seemed to care about my business. When I was buying a new tractor the sales guy seemed bothered I made him get off his chair and never did get back to me with some of the information I asked about. It's not fair to paint all dealers of the same colour with the same brush, but I can relate to your frustration.

cycleclaton,
If you have to mow in soft and or wet conditions consider the x748 and x749 mowers, these will mow at fast speeds without getting stuck as much as a ztr mower. The ztr mowers are faster but not by near as much as some will lead you to believe. The ztr would be a good choice if the ground is firm and you can pick your mowing days.

I can mow about 8 mph with the x749 and some of the ztr's can mow around 12 mph, for high speed mowing the lawn area needs to be super smooth to reap the benefits. Driving a mower around the trees fast is similar to approaching a dock in a boat, go only as fast as you are willing to hit it. I slow down to trim around trees as I don't want to damage the bark or the deck. With a 60 to 62" deck all of the x700 series and ztrs' will mow your lawn quickly, so consider the conditions you have to use them under to decide which is right for you.

The x500 series is less money but will burn more fuel to do the same job and will take a little longer. Depending on how much you need to mow these are good choices too. A comparably priced ztr will mow the lawn faster if the conditions allow it.

Steve, I'll agree somewhat with what you say, ztr's are affected by wet conditions and I'd be lying if I said I'd never pulled it out with the tractor, but you're exaggerating the effects a little in my opinion. The only issues I ever have is in the ditches along the road, and on one side of my property, the lawn drops about 8 ft in the space of about 4 ft into the ditch. Those numbers may not be %100 accurate, just my guess, but I can still mow across that ditch when it's dry, I wouldn't go near it when the lawn is wet. On the other hand, I would only drive down than section with my lawn tractor and I could not drive back up it, wet or dry, and I wouldn't even think about doing it when it was wet.

My ztr (Ferris IS3000) has a significantly better suspension than a tractor (I don't know much, ok anything, about the x700 series) and will mow over uneven lawns very nicely. A big part of my lawn used to be a farmers field is not what you would call smooth now. Apart from being 4mph faster, 12mph vs 8mph is %50 faster, I disagree that's close at all. I also approach trees wide open. It becomes second nature and the mower is so nimble it will stop and turn almost instantly.

One final plus for a ztr, after a bit of a learning curve and you become comfortable, you'll never have so much fun cutting the lawn.

I have hills and our area is wet alot. The dealer was pushing the ZTR even though I told him I thought it would be unstable on hills. Friends brought over a Cub Tank and it spun out on our hill on wet grass and I thought the lady was going to get killed.

My frustration is that I can't find a dealer who really knows the JD lawnmowers. When I ask a question, they grab a brochur and start reading. I've been in three dealerships.

I think I've found a dealership three hours away that appears to focus on the mowers. I'm going to call them to see what they have in stock. I wish I could buy from the local guys, but all we have local is Craftsman, Kubota & Cub.

I'm not spending $7,000 to get a Craftsman with rear diff lock. I'm not spending $7,000 for a Kubota 4wd with a 21 hp gas engine, and I don't want to spend $5,000 on a Cubota with diff lock. I really want a Deere, but am getting discouraged.

Deere dealership is 30 miles away. Cub guy is 5 miles away.

Well, you can walk into a big box store and buy and JD lawn tractor, so the market for them has shifted quite a bit in the past 15 years. Dealers are focused on the stuff you can't get at the big box store, and you're caught in no mans land somewhere in the middle.

I agree, ztr on wet hills is scary and makes a mess. That said, my lawn tractor on wet hills can be scary too. In dry conditions, my ztr is MUCH more stable than a lawn tractor, probably more stable than my tractor, going across hills.

1*No excuse for that kind of dealer customer treatment .
2*Kubota would be my pick of them all including JD.
3*What did you think a JD would cost ?
4*Not me after 3 dealer strikes Jd would be out.
Here is the choice(s) I made.
